The General Education Department was established in 2005. The services offered by the department include the Arguments and Knowledge programmes, (GEED111 and GEED 112) and the freshman English programmes, ENGL 191 and ENGL 192, offered by the Modern Languages Division. In conjuction with the Spike programme, the aim is to provide a range of opportunities for students to improve their English language skills and broaden their horizons by developing a critical appreciation of a range of subject areas across the curriculum.

The Department also offers a range of other English language courses, foreign language courses, including Turkish for non-native speakers, and other university core courses? and electives?. If you are a postgraduate student, or already at a very advanced level of English, you can visit the EFL 501 page, which is devoted to providing help to Masters students with their dissertations or theses, or look at our IELTS or TOEFL pages. Individualised help for students who would like to develop their language skills further, whatever level they are at is also provided through the Language Support Centres. These centres are located on the ground floor of the new General Education building, together with the SPIKE Centre? and the GE Meeting Room. The department has a staff of around seventy teachers. Information about the department of General Education is also available in the General Education web-site.

Although WikiGE has been originally created for teachers in the department of GE, any instructor at EMU is welcome to use and develop it. With the contributions of university lecturers WikiGE can grow like 'Wikipedia'. If EMU instructors like 'wiki' and use it with their colleagues and students in collaboration, wiki will definitely be popular and widespread at EMU as it is in the USA and many European countries.
