The seedwiki book is no longer being updated for new versions of seedwiki. We are leaving it in place because it provides some documentation for wikis running under some of the older seedwiki templates.  The new user manual for seedwiki is now included inside of each wiki, as a set of 'how to' pages. Any instructions or documentation you find here in the seedwikibook may be out of date.

  • seedwiki is made up of many wikis.
  • Each wiki is normally made up of five parts: a header, a menu, a footer, a right bar, and a content pane where the page content is displayed.
  • These five pieces are organized inside of a layout page and styled by a style sheet.
  • The pages that represent these pieces can all be found in your wiki's system pages: _header, _menu, _footer, _rightbar, _layout, and _style_sheet.
  • Wiki pages are made of content (translated into HTML by the visual editor) and widgets (that create special sections of the page).
  • The system pages use a lot of widgets to make navigational links for your wiki. For example, in the _menu page you will find the widget
             edit this page
which creates the "edit page" link.
  • This widget is made up of a delimiter, or marker, at each end:   and?
then comes the name of the widget: _edit_page_link
    then a separator, a straight bar:  |
  • After the straight bar come the parameters or argument sfor the widget. The parameters are always optional, and seedwiki will use defaults if you don't use any parameters at all.
  • The first parameter for the edit page widget determines what the label for the link will say:
              label=edit this page
"label" is the name of the value.  "edit this page" is the actual value to use.
  • If you go to your wiki's _menu page and change the value to "edit me baby", then the  edit link in your menu will say "edit me baby" instead of "edit this page"
    The second argument is:
title=open a visual editor to make changes on this page
The title is the text that is used for a tool-tip when you hold your mouse over the link. If you want to change what displays when people hold their mouse over your edit link you can replace "open a visual editor to make changes on this page" with the text you want to use.
You can copy and paste widgets, move them around on the page (even move them to a different page) as long as you copy or move the whole widget, including its square brackets.
