Music and Arts Centre by Lynette RevilleUse this page to describe some of the very small library collections you have worked with, and what systems you put in place to keep them running smoothly.
This was a collection of some books, quite a few magazines (including lots of local newsletters) and lots of audio and videorecordings which was collected by an association that supported ethnic music and artists. I catalogued everything first by material (books, periodicals, video) with a collection prefix for each (Book, Audio, Video etc). Then, the books and periodicals were ordered by title and catalogued with the first three letters of the title (e.g. Book - Lib for a book called "Libraries"). Video and audio cassettes were all numbered when acquired, so were arranged numerically.
The catalogue was done in Microsoft Access, and when items were entered, the staff were encouraged to think of as many subject headings as they could think of, and then check those words against an authority list updated in Microsoft Word. Data such as Author, Publisher and Year was captured in the record so those fields could be searched on in the database.
