seedwiki is back up, and I'm monitoring things to see if my new defensive precautions are actually working. You should be able to log in and edit pages and search... but some features may take a few more days to get working... and after changing more than 4,000 queries I'm sure there will be some bugs to be fixed. I run seedwiki by myself these days and I need to find a balance between providing a service and keeping it within the bounds I can take care of in what is basically my spare time. seedwiki has never done much more than paid for its server, but I need it to do at least that to be able to justify keeping it up. After talking with various seedwiki friends I'm thinking I'll gradually reduce seedwiki to paid accounts. With a generous exemption for those that can't afford to pay. I'm not going to take any drastic steps and any changes will have at least a 3 month lead time. --- yours, kenneth tyler www.seedwiki.com,

Hi,

I am trying to delete my Reformed Marriage Encounter wiki, but it is not deleting. It is still there! Also, I have a blue account and should be able to password protect my wikis. I have tried 3 times tonight to password protect OMS School Improvement wiki and it is not working. I am getting an error message. This is a critical school wiki that I need password protected. The last time I checked the site it was password protected, but now that protection has disappeared.

Beverley Rannow

I have log-ins and page editing working.

Change notifications should be working.

You still can't create new  accounts.

You can create new wikis, but the content is not copied into the home page.... still working

-- ken tyler

I haven't had time to look at help issues while I've been trying to get seedwiki back on line. It will probably take another week or so to do the necessary debugging after all the code changes that were required....hopefully then I can get back to a regular routine of responding to issues raised here.

Hi Ken,

When I access the edit pages on my wiki http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/genesis_1-11_%5Blxx%5D/genesis_1-11_%5Blxx%5D – on my MacBook, I have to edit in html. But when I access it using Windows, an editing palette appears above the edit box and I don't see the raw html code. Is there something I can do on my Mac to change views and make editing easier for me?

Thanks. Rafael

Hi.

I am unable to work with  my  http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/proofreadingplus/.  No menu or directory.  Only Safe Mode.  Would you open this up for me again?

Thanks.  Jon Gresham

I've been having a few random problems with my wiki:

1.When  I upload a document to the pages of my wiki (UIndyWWF) and use the download file widget, this message appears:

The file Rvw of Rsch on PBL.pdf, linked here as Review of PBL Research, can no longer be found on the server.

Even though the file is there, and can be downloaded with a double click on the link.

2. When I use the Membership Report function in my controls, I don't get any data on the activity of my members, even though I have been getting emails telling me that they are making changes.

3. this is more of a question--- how can I access the total history of changes for my wiki?  When I hit the "changes" button in the left menu I only get the most recent.

Thanks,

MaryJo

A colleague of mine complained about the "random letters" in the header of The Topic Tree. I said those were just editing links and that was how Seedwiki worked. She asked what happened if someone accidentally pressed them and messed up the wiki. I said I'd have to clean up the mess. Then my colleague asked if I would fix the problem.

I removed the single letter edit links from the Topic Tree's header and placed the following code in the footer. The table is tied to a class in my style sheet that makes for no borders, but you can add such a class to any wiki's stylesheet or you can live with the borders. The letters are still there, but now their meanings are clearer. They also reside in the footer, well below the fold where users are less likely to trip over them.

Please consider including a table like this and using footer placement for your edit links. Here's the Topic Tree's footer table.

Hi, Ken,

It seems that I can't upload larger files to my pages (files around and above 5MB). Are such file uploads not allowed and what is the limit to the disk space my wikis can use?

Thanks,

What does the below error code mean?

"This page was not saved because it contained words that could indicate link spamming. 33"

How do I know which words are incorrect?

Jon

Jon, which wiki and which page was it. I can't publish a list of trigger words... that would defeat the purpose of the filter that's trying to block link spammers.

Hi Ken,

Have you had a chance to fix the logic for the check boxes?? I still can't delete any pages on my wiki (uindywwf).

Thanks,

Mary Jo, Should be fixed now. Thanks for your patience.

A related question.   My real estate homepage is http://www.Heart-Dixie.com
Why is it listed in the navigation toolbar as  http://heart-dixie.com/wiki/heartofdixierealestate/heartofdixierealestate?
When I create a new page, "CreditRepairHelp,"  why is it listed as "http://heart-dixie.com/wiki/heartofdixierealestate/creditrepairhelp?"
These long & repetitive urls do not make for easy sharing with others.  I tried the tinyurl tool, but it did not seem to work for me on this type of question.

Sometimes the shorter form, such as "http://heart-dixie.com/wiki/creditrepairhelp" will work, but if I give it to someone else, all they get is a blank page.
What would be a work-around for sharing wiki pages with others?  Could this be a "simple" scripting fix during your rewrite?
Thanks, very much,   Jon

Hi.  I was in www.heart-dixie.com and then clicked on the link to go to civilsocietyblog.seedwiki.com.  The url then became http://heart-dixie.com/wiki/civilsocietyblog/civilsocietyblog.  It appears that the standalone page of civilsocietyblog.seedwiki.com became a subdomain of www.heart-dixie.com.  Is that a mistake?   Jon

jon, any domain that points to seedwiki can reference all the the wikis on seedwiki..... there is no logic that looks and the wiki you are going to and switches to a different domain... perhaps there should be. -- ken tyler

Hello.
1. Past versions of  the menu from http://www.Heart-Dixie.com have disappeared from the versions list.  My left column menu has only one previous version.
2. My graphics used for the menu buttons are also gone from the server collection.
Are these questions related to the server files question posted before, or from adding the menu-admin page?    Thanks.  Jon Gresham

**Found the missing past versions and reverted.  Had to work via control panel, directory, red level, _menu-admin.

Hi Ken,

I have 2 problems I need help with:

Problem 1 is with the following page:

http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/uindywwf/clinical_practice/mentoring?wikiPageId=1480024

When it loads it looks like 2 pages -- one overlaid on the other.  I can't make changes and I can't delete it.

I'm using a MacBook with a Core 2 Duo running 10.5.4 and working on the wiki in Firefox.  I have also tried in Safari.  A colleague has looked at it in IE on a windows machine and she said it looks fine, another looked at it in Safari and she also had problems.

Is this a mac thing? and how can I fix it since we have lot of Mac users in my wiki group?

The problem is probably because you named a page with a "/"in the middle so that the loading code thinks the name of the page is what's between the 2 slashes :  /clincal_practice/   and can't find it in the wiki page with that name. I've changed the name of the page to clinical_practice_mentoring and now it loads OK. I'll have to make the code that handles page names more sophisticated to handle a case like this.  -- ken tyler

Problem 2:

I've been trying to delete some of the pages I've made, and when I got to edit I get the following line shadowed in gray appears  above the delete checkbox:

"Only an owner of this wiki can use these options"

I can't access any of the options below this text.

Thanks,

Mary Jo

It looks like the logic for the check boxes is broken... i'll get it fixed. I've been working on moving seedwiki to a new server for the last month and having had much time, but it should move tomorrow and hopefully after that things will get back to normal -- ken tyler

Hi.
When I use the "image properties" tool, "browse server", I see many files that I and others have uploaded, and cannot figure out how to move them into appropriate subdirectories.

How should I access my files to move them out of the general area into appropriate subdirectories?  I could not log in via ftp.

Hi,

I'm new to seedwiki, and wikis in general, and in the course of designing my wiki  I inadvertently created a page that won't load properly and won't let me make any changes.  Could anyone help me with this?

Also, I'm trying to open the entire wiki up for people to make changes, but when I edit the page and go down to the bottom that option is closed to me because apparently I"m not the owner- but as far as I know I am the owner.  Am I missing something?

Thanks Ken for everything,

My New wiki looks great.  Everything seems to be working. I guess that's the best compliment any one can give. Now the hard part (proof reading) comes. Actually the really hard part will come when soft launching this here at work and then hard launching it. You've helped me get this project started.

Eileen H. Kramer

JCLRC

Good morning. I will have a lot of gratitude to express when this is over no doubt but when I went to check my accounts for both the Peshot wikis (Peshot Olam, Ajayu, Novmost, and Uku) and the account for the JCLRC Topic Tree (jclrctree) I saw this...

"Your account is allowed 0 megs of upload space. Uploaded files size totals 0 megs of space. You have 0 megs of upload space left. "

I have uploaded some small images to the Peshot wikis, and have by no means abused the system. I've never uploaded anything to jclrctree in my life. Has the policy changed? I guess I am going to take a look. If it hasn't changed, I've just discovered another bug. Note: I did get a file to upload. That message above is very misleading.

Eileen Kramer  (who still loves your product and will have a revised layout for you some time today.)

Eileen, they come in batches.... i'll check this one out. Seedwiki tries to track your file uploads to see how much disk space your using... the tracking mechanism must have a problem. -- ken tyler

 Hello.

I could find no  _rsschanges  or  _rssdirectory  widgets in my system directory (heart-dixie.com),   and neither were found in a search of seedwiki.

Jon Gresham

When I try to edit my layout on jclrctree (my new wiki) it doesn't save the change. I've tried putting in a single change and watching it not save. This is frustrating because I want to rip my wiki apart and move things around.

Now the first page of my wiki which I just edited did not save either. I don't have this trouble on Peshot  (Peshot Olam), Uku, Novmost, or Ajayu, the wikis I have under my personal email address. This is weird.

Eileen Kramer (who has done this before! )

Eileen, yes, it is weird.... I've done some experimenting and I can't see what's blocking the save of changes for layout and stylesheet.... until i can debug this you can email me a  copy of the layout file you want to use and i'll put it in place manually

ken tyler

Thanks Ken,

Let me put the style sheet on my hard drive so I can do a test run before I send you anything. This is going to be a very big rip up becuase I want the wiki to look like the website at work. This is not my design. I design much heavier than this. This design is also table free or close to it.

I cannot upload any files. I get an error message when doing so. Can you assist? I am having no success uploading files to my wiki. When clicking on Page Files I get an error message, or when clicking on Upload Files and then browsing for a file, nothing happens. No upload. Can you assist?

Wiki: Educational Leadership

Thanks, Tom

Tom, thanks for reporting this, there was an "&" missing in the url that made the page unable to determine where it should save the file... should be fixed now... i did a test upload and it worked.  -- ken tyler

I'm getting a stack overflow error when students attempt to edit my wiki page.  This is happened a number of times on different computers, and we are frustrated.  What's happening?

BarbaraM

Barbara, stack overflow usually means there's something in the HTML of the page that the editor can't parse. The fix is to copy the content of the page out and paste it into a text editor (like notepad on windows) and then copy the text back and paste it back into the page... this will strip out all the formatting and it usually will fix the stack error.   Sometimes this happens because text is pasted directly from ms word... if pasting from word trying using the "paste from word" button in the editor... which will try and clean up the text before it is pasted

Hello from Takoma Park.  This is posted May 17th.

Here is our problem.  Our members only wikis: incidents and takoma aren't working right.  After signing in, members can see them, but can't edit them.  (They used to work as intended - members could both view and edit.)  I'm the wiki owner and can do both.

In the Wiki Permissions section, this is the red option chosen:

If you check this box, only logged in users that have been made 'members' of this wiki will be allowed to view or edit pages. If you check this box then any 'password' that you have assigned this wiki will no longer be used. A wiki cannot have a general 'password' and be check 'members only' at the same time.

i'll take a look and get it fixed.... either tonight or tomorrow morning -- ken tyler took a look... turned out to be more complicated than i thought... still working on it... hopefully by tomorrow (tuesday) -- ken tyler

Thanks

OK, found the problem and fixed it... membership wiki will recognize their members again.... -- ken tyler

Maillist autoresponder.  What are the possibilities of having a maillist management system like AutoResponder Plus available at seedwiki?

Jon.  Civilsociety.seedwiki.com

jon, autoresponder is a pretty complicated system. It looks like the best path would be to install autoresponder plus on a shared linux server and then i'll write a couple of widgets that send the first name, last name, email address information to that server... or we can run the autoresponder interface (signup forms, etc.) in an i-frame on your wikis... that way you get the advantage of a full featured product... plus the ability to have it show up in your wikis -- ken tyler

jon, this is a problem that is hard to track down... the timeout for sessions should be at least 20 minutes... it could be that some links are switching to a different domain... ie from civilsocietyblog.seedwiki.com to www.seedwiki.com ... and that's killing your session. Does this happen in all your wikis... or does it happen in some more than others ? -- ken tyler

The login/out problem happens only in the "old system" civilsociety pages, and it does happen more when I switch between wikis (i.e.: civilsocietyblog. seedwiki to civilsocietyiraq.seedwiki).

Dear Ken

I have a page called Periodic Table of Elements (doemyers@mac.com) for our 8th grade science class.  The left hand side controls (directory, changes, control, ....new page) are gone from the site.  What did I do to cause this and can it be fixed?

Thanks,

Doe Myers

 Doe,

The left hand side of the page is generated by the _menu page. If you go to that page and look at past versions you should be able to restore your menu. In newer wikis there is a small "m" in the upper right hand corner of the header that will take you to that page in edit mode... cancel the edit and look at versions.  Otherwise you need to look in the "control" directory at the list of pages that start with an underscore.  What is the name of your wiki ?

 Dear Ken,
Thanks for the _viewdata and _viewdata_by_user.  They work fine.  Do you have a script that will read the csv file into an array?
      Keith

keith, do you mean a javascript array? -- ken tyler

Dear Ken,
Yea verily, a javascript array.   -- Keith

keith,

i can add code to both that will put a javascript array into memory... you'll have to put any javascript that uses the array into the page after the widgets

ken tyler

question, do you want an array of arrays, or an array of objects with attribute names ? -- ken tyler

Dear Ken,
The array would hold student answers to lesson questions/instructions, entered as text strings, sometimes as little as a single digit/letter, in text fields and text areas, also checkbox and radio button selections and selection fields.  This way a Javascript.routine can be written to step thru each response by incrementing array indexes and avoiding hardcoding variable names.

NOTE:  This revises the structure of the array (from what I wrote a few days ago):
A flat file tabular database where the first column contains a descriptive string which uniquely identifies a question or exercise and becomes the ID for that table row (do the words in it have to be concatenated in order to serve as an index for looping thru the rows?).  Other fields in a record are for:  correct answers; student answers; student queries; computed results of comparing student answer with correct answer; computed feeback to student; score; cum score; evaluation of student's ability to enter a response w/o difficulty (to gauge whether necessary to provide hints, clues or advices or presenting an easier gradient approach to the question or exercise; hints; clues; advices; easier gradient instructions; and so forth.

Input to these fields would be thru the textbox, textarea, checkbox, radio button and select lists provided by FCK Edit's form function.

    Keith

Keith,
I've added a widget called [_scriptdata] which loads the data for a page into an array of objects, the objects have these fields:                data_array[current_length].wiki_name='#session.info.wikiname#';
data_array[current_length].page_name='#variables.wikipagename#';    data_array[current_length].date_and_time = '#DateAndTime#'; data_array[current_length].ip_address = '#IPAddress#'; data_array[current_length].account_id = '#wikiaccountid#'; data_array[current_length].data_name = '#dataname#';data_array[current_length].data_value = '#datavalue#';
as you can see the name of the wiki and of the page is included, as is the accountid of the person who entered the data
I made this widget so you can put more than one of them on a page. Since the widget accepts a pagename argument [_scriptdata|somePage], you could place several widgets on a page and load an array of data from several pages.
From this array of objects you should be able to calculate numbers of correct answers etc. You can use javascript in the page to add rows to this array before you do the calculations. see the example of the "data test" page of this wiki, that uses javascript in the page to display the number of rows in the array
ken tyler

Hi.  I'm having trouble getting my page (dixiehomeowner.com) to link with dixiehomeowner.seedwiki.com.

Ken,

How do I permanently remove pages, including Versions?

Hope to hear from you. Thanks!

Delleting pages has long been over complicated on seedwiki. I've changed it so that if you delete a page the page is deleted and so are all of its versions.... gone.

I usually try to respond to questions and requests within a day... the last couple of weeks I've been really snowed under and have not been able to meet my usual standard. Hopefully things are back on track now.

--ken tyler

 Dear Ken,
How about concatenating (student) user logon data with pagename (say in a lesson distribution wiki) to create an id for forms submission, also in saving the entire page, so user can retrieve and modify his forms submissions as necessary?  Lesson pages intersperse forms boxes with preentation material.
    Thanks.
         Keith

Keith, if you have the students get free seedwiki accounts i can set up a variation of the form data widget that will save data per logged in user. Coming soon. -- ken tyler

OK Keith, try [_viewdata_by_user] which will only work if the user is logged into their seedwiki account... it will only display the answers given by the logged in user... when you want to see all the answers you can just switch the widget to [_viewdata]  --- give it a try

America No. 1?

America by the numbers

by Michael Ventura

02/03/05 "ICH"  - - No concept lies more firmly embedded in our national character
? than the notion that the USA is "No. 1," "the greatest." Our broadcast media are, in essence, continuous advertisements for the brand name "America Is No. 1." Any office seeker saying otherwise would be committing political suicide. In fact, anyone saying otherwise will be labeled "un-American." We're an "empire," ain't we? Sure we are. An empire without a manufacturing base. An empire that must borrow $2 billion a day from its competitors in order to function. Yet the delusion is ineradicable. We're No. 1. Well...this is the country you really live in:

jim,

there was a problem with the "national character" link, some html got mixed up in the link, it looked like this.... [national </span><span style="font-size: 8pt;">character] ..... we try to parse html out of the links but sometimes its not possible... and then the link tries to send you to a strange page name which won't save correctly.   I found this by looking at the page in "source" mode and fixed it... and now that link works.

I am having trouble retrieving data from the form on page UUC_Beliefs on the wiki UU Campus. Instructions indicate using the view data widget will retrieve the data. So far, this returns what looks like what might be header data but nothing else. The form consists of a lot of select elements and a submit button. Couldn't find any other documentation on that widget so don't know if the widget needs more than that. The PageName I used is just the page that includes both the form and the widget. Suggestions?  Do forms still work? Didin't find any howtos in the wiki. John Faust

<!-- WIDGET: _viewdata|PageName -->

<!--
This widget lets you view data collected by a data form. It takes two arguments.
1) is the name of the page you placed your form on to gather the data.
2) is the number of rows you want to display at once. If there are more records than will display on one page the data will be displayed with "next" and "previous" links. This argument is optional.
You can also use the downloaddata widget to download your form data as a CSV file.
-->

<!-- END WIDGET -->

john,  i tried entering some data on the page and it seems to accept multiple records now... i did change the page name in the widget from the URL version of the name with an underscore to the normal version of the name without an  underscore... that may have made the difference. -- ken tyler

Dear Ken,
Can you please activate the _share_pages widget?
When do you think the Forms selection in the editor will be fully functional for both Firefox and IE browsers?

              Keith

 March 28, 2008

Keith,

Sorry, this took a whiile... been snowed under. _share_pages is something we started but never finished. Could you use _include_page instead to make your templates. Include page lets you make one page and then have it show up in multiple places. Include page does not reparse the included page... so wiki links will not be parsed... but regular html links will work.  Are you trying to use pages from one wiki in another wiki...if so then i could make a version of include page that would do that for you.

If this won't work for you let me know and give me a specific example of a page you would like use use as a menu and I'll take another look.-- ken tyler

I have been trying to delete some pages from my wiki (ald_staff_training.seedwiki.com) with no success.  I have a Blue account and am logged in as an administrator, but the "delete this page" checkbox of the pages is grayed out.  I am not trying to delete the home page, just regular pages.  Here's one of the pages, I'm trying to delete: http://seedwiki.com/wiki/ald_staff_training/aldlive?wikiPageId=1305723

I need to add a lot of menu selections on both left and right sides and also maximize screen area for content display.  This can be done by making menus appear upon cursor rolling over of a narrow bar (image) at far left and right screen borders.  Need instructions for inserting the Javascript.  E.g., how access the head section?  Or can that be avoided if you pre-install necessary javascript references?  Perhaps you can install a javascript library on the server in case code snippets to be inserted in the body section require it.

Or, can you make an arrangement with a supplier of javascript code snippets to reference its library and then provide us with a link to its site as a one-stop-shop for our javascript functionality needs?

Keith

keith, if you tell me the URL of the javascript library you would like to use, I'll load it on the server. Then you can go to your wiki's _layout page and enter a script tag to reference it. Then you will be able to use the library functions in your wiki. You access the "head" of your wiki's pages by clicking on the small "l" in the upper right hand corner.. or by going to the directory and going to the _layout page.

Nothing happens in response to selecting the  _share_pages widget.  What is supposed to happen after selecting it?

Over at the shared site, will any edits one makes on this shared page be reflected in the originating document? If not, this widget seems like it will provide a template function (which I need).

I have pages that are listed in the directory but cannot delete them and to edit them the message "page not Found" comes up. Also, as administrator I do not get a checkbox to delete them. re: www.seedwiki/wiki/quicksource.

HELP!

can you tell me what the names of the pages are? -- ken tyler

Ken,

the first page listed at http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/quicksource/_directory is one. Generally, any page with an ampersand has a problem.

I am about to sound dumb in public, but I have a few questions.  I love seedwiki and find it the most versatile wiki platform for my classroom projects. On Friday March 7 I was using a seedwiki,  http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/smithbio2/smithbio2, for a class.I made it a week or so ago and checked it March 6 and it was working fine.  For the entire hour, the wiki would not load properly. On the left and right hand side there were repeating lines saying account loading.  No links worked, including the edit link. It was like it was paused . Our network manager mentioned something about java errors and said it was problem at your end.  I was on IE, but I tried then on firefox and had same problem.   Can you tell me what might have gone wrong?

Thanks

Joan

Joan, doesn't sound like a dumb question... sounds like a very frustrating situation. What seems to have happened is that something (probably a search engine..most probably google which has quite a reputation in this regard) made the sever be very overloaded... so that it could not respond to the "load" requests. I am working on a new version of seedwiki that should be more efficient and hope to have it available soon.

Dear Ken, Many thanks to you and all who work with you for this wiki.  I am writing b/c I am having problems saving new pages after the ? link option is clicked.  I am also experiencing problems saving edits within the pages.  Can you help?  http://seedwiki.com/wiki/ap_european_wikipedia/ap_european_wikipedia  Again, thank you very much for your time.  Lisa

Lisa, I tried a test edit on your wiki's home page and it seemed to work fine. Usually the problems you describe happen because the page content has been created in a program like MS Word and then copied and pasted into the wiki editor. Word adds a lot of complicated markup to a page and sometimes the editor can't handle it. Sometimes is is possible to create a page directly in the editor that gets so complicated the editor can no longer parse the underlying HTML, in both cases the page will stop saving any changes...... the solution is to copy the text of the page and paste it into a text editor (like Notepad) which will strip out all the formatting... then copy the text from Notepad and paste it back into the page... that usually gets things going again. -- ken tyler

[Help please!I don't really kjnow what I';m doing--trying to upload pictures to my wiki page.  After the upload page I get a message saying error--why?  Can anyone explain to me what is the process and why it doesn't seem to be working for me??  \thanks, margaret

Hi, Margaret... it is a little bit of a trick. Can you tell use what the name of your wiki is, and which page you are trying to upload the pictures to ? You have to be logged into your seedwiki account to be able to upload pictures... I'll check your wiki and see what the problem might be that is causing your error message -- ken tyler

Feb 20, 2008 Membership Wikis Get New Option.

It has been possible for owners of wikis created with "red" account priviledges to use 2 sets of menus, one for the public, the other for the wiki owner. This let's you remove the "edit" links from the public menus and create a public wiki that looks like a conventional website and still use all the wiki features to edit and create pages when you were logged in as the wiki owner.

Thanks to a conversation with John Kearney of the coastal_learning_communities_network wiki this feature has been extended. If your wiki has been set up as a membership wiki, then you can set it to also offer the wiki members the "admin" set of menu/header/footer/rightbar instead of the "public" set. This means that members can see the links for editing pages, creating new pages, etc. but other views will see only the public menu/header/footer/rightbar.

Ken (about limited size for data collected by forms)
I've tried  one more time with
http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/yyyyyyy_4/yyyyyyy_4  and with a new form http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/yyyyyyy_4/bigggger  but unsuccesfully :-(
Is it the textarea which doesnt work or the  form/post which failed, or the viewdata which failed?
DenisB

Denis, I think the limit was 4000. I've changed the storage to a "text" type field (which is the same type used for the wikipages themselves). Give it another try. -- ken tyler

Hi Ken,

one more question about the data collected by form. Is there a limit for the size of an 'atomic' data collected by a form? When I put a long text in a textarea and try to post it, it seems that only the beginning of it is collected (~3600 char?) Is it right? Can this be changed to something bigger (30000 char or no limit)?

DenisB

 Ken:

As always, thanks for your prompt response and unfailing generosity.  Seedwiki is a rare and remarkable thing/place/state of mind.

David Birn

When I try to click on the "search" textbox at the top of the page, it automatically clicks the "seedwiki" link.  Therefore I cannot search.  This happens in Firefox, but not Konquerer. 1/24/08

Thanks for the heads up. The end of the "a" tag was in the wrong place. Fixed now. -- ken tyler 1/25/2008

3 things:   First, I  thought you should know about a bug I encountered last night constructing fa wiki for a class (wiki name: sound design)(i've been working in IE7).  After several hours of tweaking to get things set up, it suddenly changed templates without my doing anything. (From "grey tab" to "chat" I think).  Going back to previous versions didn't help.  It has reverted to what I expected this AM, so no harm done., but It was a bit disconserting.

--- sorry, you must have accidentally triggered "safe mode". there is a small "safe mode" link at the bottom of every wiki page so that if people change something in their wiki that blocks its pages from displaying they can use safe mode to go back and correct the changes. I'll add a banner across the top of the page to "safe mode" that will give people a better idea what is happening and include a link to go back to normal mode.

Second,  is there a way to create a link  within a page to a file which I have uploaded to the seedwiki server?   I understand that I can access files by going to the list associated with each page, but it would be great to be able to insert a direct link to a particular  file from within a block of text.

-- when you are editing a page there is a list of widgets displayed below the editor. The one you want is listed there: [_downloadfile|file_name=yourFileName.doc|link_label=label you want for link|file_wikipagename=page name file was uploaded to]

Third, have you set a limit on file storage space?   What you offer is already verging on too amazing to be true, but is it really possible that there is literally no limit to your generosity?     David Birn

-- yes there are limits on file storage. I see that the description of the different account levels no longer mention them. I'll have to correct that. They are modest for a free account, but very few people ever seem to overrun them.   -- ken tyler

Hello,
and congratulation for seedwiki, it's a wonderfull wiki.
mainly I am using seedwiki for experiment with javascript (in near feature, I hope I could have some wiki for my students too, about arm, prolog, or javascript ...) and I have done a script which used form/post and [_viewdata| ...] to save/retreive some content (here http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/denisb/simpletas the content of a TextArea, yes, it looks like a layer over seedwiki (seedwiki know how to save/retreive), but it is a layer which could be used in program) but I have some problems about these data, and the explanation given in http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/the_seed_wiki_book/using_html_forms_to_collect_data do not answer my questions. First, is there a way to delete/erase the data collected by a form ? Second, it seems that sometimes the data disapear ? Is this right ? when? (this could be a reply to the previous question), Can we be sure that the data will not disappear ?
Best for you, and seedwiki,
DenisB. (use FireFoxe, example above not tested with ie)

 DenisB,

What is your goal in saving and retrieving content. It would be interesting to be able to enter code into a text area and then execute it and see the results. However, there would have to be some safeguards on the kinds of commands that could be run. Perhaps if you have access to a server that could accept ftp posts of text and execute them and return the results that would allow us to have a widget on seedwiki that could send off its text to have it executed... and by pointing that widget at different ULR on the code running server you could use it for different programming languages. Or perhaps a firefox extension could be written that saved the text as a file on the student's computer and then shelled out to run it... many possibilities and I would be interested in exploring them... do you have skype ? perhaps we could talk.

ken tyler

Thank you Ken for the reply, I will try to answer some of your question.

> What is your goal in saving and retrieving content.

I would like my students to write program in a wiki, execute it, validate it, ... (as people/students are writing articles in a wiki) So, I think they would need to save it (the program) and sometime save data, results. The editor FCKEditor used by seedwiki is fine for html, but not for code, so I will try to add some editor (written in javascript) on top of the mechanism I've used, to give them some 'nice' development environment, and in the context I need also to be able to save/retrieve data from javascript.

>It would be interesting to be able to enter code into a text area and then execute it and see the results.

Yes, it's already possible (and some more : construct html page). Go to the http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/denisb/consolejavascript and open a terminal (it’s javascript code I’ve taken  from JS-WebTerminal Object V1.4 by Norbert Landsteiner and adapted) Import a special page with the builtin command importJS (for example the special page with save/retrieve http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/denisb/simpletas) : >importJS(‘simpletas’) Then you could observe the variable tmp (with buitin command dump) >dump(tmp) And you could  execute the function inc defined in the page >inc(tmp) N.B. You could also create a html page from html code put in a special page.

>there would have to be some safeguards on the kinds of commands that could be run

Why? and what kinds of commands? (excuse me, I really do not understand, problems of security with javascript)

>by pointing that widget at different ULR on the code running server you could use it for different programming languages

It is not necessary, we just need to find a javascript interpretor of the targeted language. There are some … My targeted language is ProLog, I’ve already find a javascript interpreter and succeed to put it in TiddlyWiki see http://groups.google.com/group/TiddlyWikiDev/browse_thread/thread/7c01c9aec7fd44ec/e797832d0fd1cb48?lnk=gst&q=prolog#e797832d0fd1cb48 So, I will try to put it on seedwiki soon. Other language interpreter in javascript could be found at http://www.noe-kaleidoscope.org/people/DenisB/blog/start-0_-2008-02-07_read-91 And I’m looking for interpreter for Ada, Java, C, ARM, and some other major language programming, but this is one another story.

>do you have skype ? perhaps we could talk.

Sorry.

Best regards (still looking for an answer for my question : is there a way to delete the data ? or when is it done ?) DenisB.

Denis,

I have been thinking about how to address what you are trying to do. What if there were a special kind of page, a "text" page, that displayed its content in "pre" tags and that used a textarea when you "edited" it. Then the text of the code would be saved in the page rather than in the database. That would mean you could access past versions, and delete the page when you wanted to. I think all that would be necessary is to agree on an encoding... for example... all pages that start with txt_ will be treated as text pages. So that txt_my code would display inside pre tags, and if you clicked on edit it would open the text area as an editor. This text area could be modified by various firefox addons, or if you have some code for a text area adapted as a code editor i would be glad to include that --- ken tyler

Hi  Ken, and one more thank,

First, I think that what I want is a default behaviour for wiki which would be 'edition'  (and then if  ok 'save'), and not a 'consult' default behaviour (and then if necessary 'edit').
Second, there is no problem with the fact that code is saved in a database, it's fine. It seems to me that it is not necessary that it is saved in the page.
So, I'm not sure I would use the text_pages you imagine.
What I'm looking for is just, to be able to save/reload data from javascript,  create/delete page of data from javascript or widget. I think I find how to do all these basic functionalities with seedwiki (with data collected from a form, but with my solution, all the version of data are collected and saved by the form, and so I think these data should be purged sometimes, 'on demand', or else after some use, the load for retreiving all the data and select the last version risk to be too heavy)
After, when these basic functionalities would have been established, work on js-editor could start, and so on ... (thinking about what could be a js-wiki, defining a environment for student working on algorithm, ...)

Best for you,
Denis.

Denis,

I have made some changes in the veiw data widget. Now it displays an delete link next to each submission, if you click on the link all the fields submitted in that submission will be deleted. comment: Ok, that's what I needed, Thank you Ken!  I have also added an exclusion so that any button whose name starts with "btn"  (for example "btn_submit") will not be displayed as if it were data.  comment : Nice!

I also made it possible to reload an existing submission. If you click on the "edit" link the page will try to reload that submission. For this to work the input controls (ie a text area) must have the same "id" as its name:   name="some_name" id="SOME_NAME" .   Because coldfusion capitalizes all input field names the ID must be in all caps. Otherwise the javascript will not be able to reload the values into the control.

When you reload a previous submission and edit it and then save it, it becomes a new posting, rather than updating the submission you started with.

You can see my test example here:  http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/yyyyyyy_4/yyyyyyy_4? comment: Yes, it works!

Take a look and see what you think.

-- ken tyler

Denis, sorry I missed seeing your replies. Let me add something to the form data functions so you can delete the data. I'll let you know when its ready to try. -- ken tyler
