Dear Ken
I have a page called Periodic Table of Elements (doemyers@mac.com) for our 8th grade science class. The left hand side controls (directory, changes, control, ....new page) are gone from the site. What did I do to cause this and can it be fixed?
Thanks,

Dear Ken,
First off, thank you for all that you do to make seedwiki wonderful. I have been experiencing two problems: 1. I am unable to create new pages successfully after I click on ? and then click on Save Your Changes, I receive the response that there is no page. 2. When I try to edit a page with new information, the page often does not update. My link info indicates http://seedwiki.com/wiki/ap_european_wikipedia/ap_european_wikipedia?usermessage=Your%20edit%20was%20cancelled Please help. Thank you, Lisa
When I try to click on the "search" textbox at the top of the page, it automatically clicks the "seedwiki" link. Therefore I cannot search. This happens in Firefox, but not Konquerer. 1/24/08

I am having the same problem described by Odile - "After having made a change in the edit-window, I return to the normal mode and I see the changes I have made: they're all there on the screen. But when I return into the edit-mode immediatly after, I get an earlier version and NOT the up-to-date version. " I have this problem using Internet Explorer. Why does SeedWiki not display properly in Safari? The page looks fine until you try to edit a page. Then the html shows and not the word processing bar. I am building a web page using iWeb, and the site previews in Safari. PB Wiki does not display in Safari either.
Melinda
Melinda, the open-source editor used in seedwiki depends on javascript... so the browser you use has to be standards compliant. I thought the latest version of safarai was... but perhaps not. The safe bet is to use firefox.

I tried again and again ...(see bug report below: http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/hypertext)
now for example it is the first page; when you click onto th edit button, you get by no means the page as you see it on the screen .... after you'Ve just changed something on the pag ... i'm really hoping for help ... perhaps I do something I shouldn't do, I've really no idea. Never had this problem with older wikis ...
Perhaps I should be more precise:
After having made a change in the edit-window, I return to the normal mode and I see the changes I have made: they're all there on the screen.
But when I return into the edit-mode immediatly after, I get an earlier version and NOT the up-to-date version.
After half an hour or so eventually I get the page as it is or should be.
THANKS FOR an answer ... I love seedwiki nevertheless ;)

I'have been having problems for a while now with the editing ... I think since the new design has come ..
I see the page all in the browser - as it should be - with alle the changes I've made.
But when I click the button to get into the edit mode, I'm getting an older version: not the one I see in the browser in the normal mode.

I'd be very happy if this could be fixed .... thank you so much.

Thanks for taking a look at it. I think the name is a bad syntax as well.

Jon,
Yes, you were right. It's bad syntax. Thanks for the report.
lease-to-own/rent-to-own should go to lease-to-own_rent-to-own

Our code should make that conversion when a page is first created.
I've changed that wiki page URL manually in our database. I will find other wikis that may be experiencing the same problem and do the same for them.
And Kenneth and I will fix the underlying code that makes that conversion.

Hi,
The CSS for our two wikis is mostly reading correctly.
The exception is the background colors, which have been reading as white for the past few weeks.
The sites are here (http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/whole_terrain_resources_for_writers)

Any way to resolve these?

looks like the editor munged you css files and saved them in display mode with line returns in them. I removed the <br/>'s and things seem to be back to normal. Dear Ken and Stephen:
I know the problem's with me and not with seedwiki--I know I'm making some hairball error--but I'd appreciate some advice, please. I have created a wiki for a class project (wikiDic), and while I, the owner of the wiki, can edit pages, no one else can. I've combed the permissions and controls sections to see if I've disabled non-owner editing, but I don't think I have. Even when I create a dummy account and then add that dummy as an owner, the original owner me is still the only one who can edit. HELP! Please. Thank you. Tracy
Tracy,
Only the main page of your wiki seemed to have been affected. I couldn't save any edits myself in firefox or in IE, but I could edit and save some of the other pages on your wiki. Also the fckeditor wouldn't let me click on its 'source' button, and that's an indication that the fckeditor couldn't process some of the html it was editing.
To fix it, in edit mode I clicked on the 'Text Area' link (located near the bottom of the page below the 'save your changes' button, and below the check boxes), that gave me a way to fix the html manually. The html wasn't all that bad actually. I'm surprised that it even choked on it. There were about 15 unterminated BR html tags in a row. The correct syntax for unterminated BR requires a back-slash at its end as in 'BR /'. Usually, the fckeditor corrects those minor syntax details, but this time it couldn't, it gave me a stack overflow in IE and some kind of object recursion error in firefox.

Ken,
My original intent was to use multiple _addcomments widgets per page until you indicated that wasn't the way it worked. Then I changed to multiple _insertcomments and an _addcomments for more generic issues. My preference is still to have multiple threaded forums/page. If this is a possibility, it doesn't matter how it is done--whatever is easiest for you. Thanks for the information.

On my wiki pages, I have multiple _insertcomments widgets and an _addcomments widget. When I insert a comment at the first _insertcomments widgets, that comment also appears in the _addcomments widget display. The same behavior happens when I insert a comment from the second _insertcomments widgets as well. (I'm guessing this is true for any of the others.) All seem to accumulate in the _addcomments widget display. Another problem occurs when I edit a comment in an _insertcomments widget: It duplicates my name in the attribution line regardless of whether I remove the duplication during editing. Of course, the same attribution line appears in the _addcomments widget as well. Thanks for any advice or assistance.
John Faust
John, The addcomments widget is designed to be placed alone on a page. It "collects" its comments by associating them with the page ID. The insertcomments widgets have unique names, and they use those names plus the page ID to know which comments they should display. The difference between addcomments and insert comments is that addcomments allows you to comment on comments, while insert comments allows only one level of comments. We could make an insertcomments type widget that would allow comments on comments, and then you could use that instead of addcomments. (or perhaps we can modify add comments so that it will allow multiple placement on the same page. -- ken tyler
2nd comment: I tried again and discovered that the attribution line can "corrected" from the editing window. That is, it can be kept from duplicating my name. However, it still placed anonymous on the line after my name. Perhaps this was your intention to have a string of editors listed. If not too challenging, maybe successive edits by the same user could be collapsed. Maybe it is possible to only allow edits by the logged in user who wrote the comment. Assumes comments are really tied to the logged in user.
John Faust
Comments are tied to the logged in user. We'll fix the problem with the duplicate attribution. We'll also look into the question of editing permissions. Collapsing comments would be the same thing as allowing a user to edit the comments they already made, it seems. It would be easier to allow the user to decide which comments to "expand" and to try to automatically "collapse" a set of comments that are made by the same person.

Seedwiki team:
The right sidebar search box (which I assume limits the search to the specified wiki) does not seem to be working correctly. After entering a search string and hitting "go", the results page gives me the following error msg: "You did not enter anything to search for. ---> "
IMHO, the ability to restrict a keyword search to a specified wiki is a fundamental requirement of a wiki host site. Hopefully you will be able to fix this feature soon.
The "search seedwiki" button, which searches EVERYTHING (except maybe the private wikis?) on seedwiki seems to work fine. I am using IE version 6 as my browser.

I'm evaluating wiki hosts for my organization. A "backup to local PC" feature is one of our requirements. Your zip backup seems to fit the bill. However, after unzipping the html files to the same directory, the relative links do not work. First problem was spaces in the windowsOS file path, that was easily solved by creating an unzip folder that has no spaces in the file path. Second problem is more serious. The links to other wiki pages in the backup files get parsed similar to
"/C:/Temp_del/temp02/PageName?wikiPageId=1046300"
The "?wikiPageId=1046300" makes IE or FireFox unable to link to the file.
-KW
KW, we'll take a look. The ?wikipageid serves no purpose in a local file, and we should be able to remove it.
KW, it turned out that the ?.... was not the culprit, but the lack of a file extension. We've fixed things and if you download the pages now the links should work.
-- ken tyler
18-Jul-2007: Great job on the zip download fix. I noticed that embedded images in the backup html files are linked back to the seedwiki site. So they work great if I'm connected to the internet. I also noticed that the files that were uploaded to the wiki are not included in the backup zip archive. It would be nice to have the option of also backing up all of the uploaded files. For example all the files that are returned with the [_downloadallfiles] widget. After clicking Control Panel !> "backup wiki-download pages" you could have another link that says 'download pages as separate HTML files (include all attached files).' It would be important to preserve the existing html-files only backup option, as backing up the attached files may be problematic to some users due to file size issues. May I also suggest that you consider renaming the "backup wiki-download pages" button to "Backup my wiki." For those of us users (business, academia) who use wikis as a collaborative method to keep standard operating proceedures updated, seedwiki's ability to backup-to-html-files (with the ability to backup all of the uploaded files attached to the wiki) would significantly differentiate seedwiki from most (all?) of the other wiki hosts out there. It would definitely put seedwiki on the top of my list! Go for it! -KW
BTW, My organization does marine biology and field work. We want to create a wiki of our standard operating proceedures. The requirement is that we can work on the wiki in the office and then take a snapshot and bring it with us when we are in the field (off-line) so that we can reference our documentation.
For a few weeks now, I've been getting digest update emails for what seems to be ALL the wikis on seedwiki. I've finally looked into it, and it appears that on the subscription page, my subscription for "TivoWebPlus" has changed into a subscription for "" (blank). Peter, thanks for the pointer to the broken link. You'll need a red account to publish your wiki as a web site. That lets you have 2 menus for your wiki... one for the public... the other for the wiki owner. People usually take the wiki-type links (like edit this page) off the public menu and leave them on their owner's menu. This lets them use the wiki editor to create what looks like an ordinary read-only web site. -- ken tyler

I think I have found the bug that disabled links to new pages, as reported on May 1 below. The square bracket notation does not work if placed on a page below an existing anchor. The New Products page in the fipse_elixr.seedwiki.com wiki illustrates this: the same line above the anchor works fine to point to the page Faculty Guide to Authoring an ELIXR Case Story, but inserted below an anchor it does not work as a pointer to a page.
It took a long time to find this, I hope you can fix it
Tom Carey
Tom,
Thanks to you, we found it !!!
This was a fun one to work on.
It was a variable that was not being reset within a loop, that's what was causing the problem.
Please re-save any page that are currently exhibiting this behavior, and they will now work as intended.
We've tested this on your 'New Products' page, and it works now.

Hi Ken and all:
I think I have found a bug in the _google_analytics widget that was recently introduced. I placed the widget in the footer of my Coastal_Governance site with the code given by Google Analytics when I registered. After several days, I was not seeing any results on the Google results page for my account. I checked with the Google techs and they said I had multiple instances of Google Analytics code on my site, which is not allowed. After checking the source for not only my wiki but for other wikis, I came to the conclusion that there is a Google Analytics code embedded in the Source of Seedwiki. I understand this to mean that no wiki owner can use the _google_analytics widget with their own unique code as long as the other code is in the Seedwiki Source. I hope this makes sense. To see this code, right click on this page, choose "view page source", then hit control-f, and type in "google-analytics". This will take you to the code.

Looks like we mis-understood how the widget needed to be used. We'll change the way its being written into the page and solve this problem... it might take us a day or so. Thanks for such a specific and helpful report. -- ken tyler

Good evening. Long time, no tinkering. Black boxes and intellectual freedom issues in the world of PHPBB boards drove me back to wikiland and your lovely build from the bottom wiki. I forgot a longstanding problem. It is very difficult to make tables with colored borders in either the editor or via the style sheet. I've used a workaround of either nested tables or very thin cells to get the same visual effect, but it would be nice to have pretty borders like Invisionfree.com and not have to use workarounds to create them.
