Backing Up The Wiki (new method)

The old method of backing up the Wiki, while very quick, also introduced several problems - namely relying on proper placement of compressed images into the "Compress Photos for Wiki" folder.  While at some point images might have been saved there regularly, the systematic saving of images subsequently went bye-bye.  Thus, there is a slower, but vastly more reliable method for backing up the Wiki.

  1. Make a new folder in the Backups folder (L:\!!! Front Desk Files !!!\Training - Wiki, Video, Audio\Wiki\Backups).  Use the naming scheme of the backups folders already there.

  2. Within this folder, make 3 new folders: "front page", "subdirectories - index pages", and "subdirectories - not index pages".

  3. Open Mozilla Firefox (because MS Internet Explorer bites).  For each page, go to "File->Save Page As" and select "Web Page, complete" under "Save as type:"  No need to rename the page, Firefox will use the page name that seedwiki gave each page.

  4. Save the main page (Antioch University New England Library Library Staff Training and Support Wiki) in the "front page" directory you just made.

  5. Save each of the "main list" pages in the "subdirectories - index pages" folder.

  6. Make two new folders in the "subdirectories - index pages" folder - "All Things AV Subdirectory" and "All Things Management Subdirectory".  Save each page from the "All Things AV" page in the "All Things AV Subdirectory".  Same idea for the "All Things Management" page.

  7. Save all other Wiki pages that aren't in the main A-Z list in the "subdirectories - not index pages" folder.  This would include "Front Desk Need to Know", "Suggest Addition", "Take the Tour", "Technology in the ANE Library", "This Wiki", and "What's New".  Basically cruise through the Wiki directory and save any page not saved in steps 4 and 5.

In the event that you need to restore a page, go to the backups folder and click on the appropriate file.  Firefox will load the text and images into a new tab.  You can use these to rebuild the page.

Backing Up The Wiki (old method)

Back-up should occur at least once per semester, after the staff wiki-editing project.
Do not delete old backups, as they are a good history of the Wiki.

1. Make a new folder within the Backups folder. Open the Self Help folder on the desktop. Next, open the Training folder, then the Wiki folder, and finally the Backups folder. Create your new folder and rename it with the day's date.

2. Copy the Compressed Photos for Wiki folder found in the Training folder in Self Help. To do this select the folder, right-click on itand select copy. Open your new backup folder again. Right click somewhere in the folder and select paste.

3. Log into the Wiki.

4. Go to the page directory. The link is found on the left side of the page. (see image)

5. Scroll towards the bottom of the screen. Click on backup wiki-download pages. (see image)

6. Choose download pages as HTML files. (see image)

7. A box will pop up. Choose save to disk. If the files are downloaded to the desktop, be sure to click and drag them over to your new backup folder.

8. This folder will be a ".zip" file with a cute zipper on the folder icon. Open this folder to check that it is full of .html files with the same name as all of the articles on the Wiki.

9. Open one of the files and make sure you see the text content of one of the wiki articles. The graphics might be broken and not appear, this is normal.
