Hi.  I'm having difficult saving pages within my wiki.  Changes to the first (home page)  and second level pages are fine.  But third level pages are not saved and can not be retrieved.  Thanks.  Linda

This weekend was so tiring i worked and went to church. The same as usual. I guess some thimgs never change.shalise brown pd5

Am having trouble retrieving data from page form. Instructions indicate using widget will retrieve the data. This returns what looks like header data but nothing else. Couldn't find any other documentation on that widget so don't know if the widget needs more than that. The PageName I used is just the page that includes both the form and the widget. The page is UUC_Beliefs. Suggestions?  John Faust

3 things:   First, I  thought you should know about a bug I encountered last night constructing fa wiki for a class (wiki name: sound design)(i've been working in IE7).  After several hours of tweaking to get things set up, it suddenly changed templates without my doing anything. (From "grey tab" to "chat" I think).  Going back to previous versions didn't help.  It has reverted to what I expected this AM, so no harm done., but It was a bit disconserting.

--- sorry, you must have accidentally triggered "safe mode". there is a small "safe mode" link at the bottom of every wiki page so that if people change something in their wiki that blocks its pages from displaying they can use safe mode to go back and correct the changes. I'll add a banner across the top of the page to "safe mode" that will give people a better idea what is happening and include a link to go back to normal mode.

Second,  is there a way to create a link  within a page to a file which I have uploaded to the seedwiki server?   I understand that I can access files by going to the list associated with each page, but it would be great to be able to insert a direct link to a particular  file from within a block of text.

-- when you are editing a page there is a list of widgets displayed below the editor. The one you want is listed there: [_downloadfile|file_name=yourFileName.doc|link_label=label you want for link|file_wikipagename=page name file was uploaded to]

Third, have you set a limit on file storage space?   What you offer is already verging on too amazing to be true, but is it really possible that there is literally no limit to your generosity?     David Birn

-- yes there are limits on file storage. I see that the description of the different account levels no longer mention them. I'll have to correct that. They are modest for a free account, but very few people ever seem to overrun them.   -- ken tyler

Hello,
and congratulation for seedwiki, it's a wonderfull wiki.
mainly I am using seedwiki for experiment with javascript (in near feature, I hope I could have some wiki for my students too, about arm, prolog, or javascript ...) and I have done a script which used form/post and [_viewdata| ...] to save/retreive some content (here http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/denisb/simpletas the content of a TextArea, yes, it looks like a layer over seedwiki (seedwiki know how to save/retreive), but it is a layer which could be used in program) but I have some problems about these data, and the explanation given in http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/the_seed_wiki_book/using_html_forms_to_collect_data do not answer my questions. First, is there a way to delete/erase the data collected by a form ? Second, it seems that sometimes the data disapear ? Is this right ? when? (this could be a reply to the previous question), Can we be sure that the data will not disappear ?
Best for you, and seedwiki,
DenisB. (use FireFoxe, example above not tested with ie)

 DenisB,

What is your goal in saving and retrieving content. It would be interesting to be able to enter code into a text area and then execute it and see the results. However, there would have to be some safeguards on the kinds of commands that could be run. Perhaps if you have access to a server that could accept ftp posts of text and execute them and return the results that would allow us to have a widget on seedwiki that could send off its text to have it executed... and by pointing that widget at different ULR on the code running server you could use it for different programming languages. Or perhaps a firefox extension could be written that saved the text as a file on the student's computer and then shelled out to run it... many possibilities and I would be interested in exploring them... do you have skype ? perhaps we could talk.

ken tyler

Thank you Ken for the reply, I will try to answer some of your question.

> What is your goal in saving and retrieving content.

I would like my students to write program in a wiki, execute it, validate it, ... (as people/students are writing articles in a wiki) So, I think they would need to save it (the program) and sometime save data, results. The editor FCKEditor used by seedwiki is fine for html, but not for code, so I will try to add some editor (written in javascript) on top of the mechanism I've used, to give them some 'nice' development environment, and in the context I need also to be able to save/retrieve data from javascript.

>It would be interesting to be able to enter code into a text area and then execute it and see the results.

Yes, it's already possible (and some more : construct html page). Go to the http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/denisb/consolejavascript and open a terminal (it’s javascript code I’ve taken  from JS-WebTerminal Object V1.4 by Norbert Landsteiner and adapted) Import a special page with the builtin command importJS (for example the special page with save/retrieve http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/denisb/simpletas) : >importJS(‘simpletas’) Then you could observe the variable tmp (with buitin command dump) >dump(tmp) And you could  execute the function inc defined in the page >inc(tmp) N.B. You could also create a html page from html code put in a special page.

>there would have to be some safeguards on the kinds of commands that could be run

Why? and what kinds of commands? (excuse me, I really do not understand, problems of security with javascript)

>by pointing that widget at different ULR on the code running server you could use it for different programming languages

It is not necessary, we just need to find a javascript interpretor of the targeted language. There are some … My targeted language is ProLog, I’ve already find a javascript interpreter and succeed to put it in TiddlyWiki see http://groups.google.com/group/TiddlyWikiDev/browse_thread/thread/7c01c9aec7fd44ec/e797832d0fd1cb48?lnk=gst&q=prolog#e797832d0fd1cb48 So, I will try to put it on seedwiki soon. Other language interpreter in javascript could be found at http://www.noe-kaleidoscope.org/people/DenisB/blog/start-0_-2008-02-07_read-91 And I’m looking for interpreter for Ada, Java, C, ARM, and some other major language programming, but this is one another story.

>do you have skype ? perhaps we could talk.

Sorry.

Best regards (still looking for an answer for my question : is there a way to delete the data ? or when is it done ?) DenisB.

Hi there. I've been unable to upload files to my wiki (http://seedwiki.com/wiki/wfp_birders_and_colombia/), and don't know why. When I select a file and click "upload", the page takes a while to refresh itself and then says "no files have been uploaded to this wiki". I'm using firefox with vista. Any thoughts?  -Jess 1/13/08

Jess, We can duplicate the problem... which is the first step. We're working on getting this fixed. -- ken tyler 1/16/08

Jess, Took a while, but I think I've got this solved. I've uploaded (and deleted) a couple of test files to your home page and things seem to working again. -- ken tyler

seedwiki was down this morning for a couple of hours because of a problem stemming from an automatic update of the server's operating system by microsoft. We appologize for the problem and for the interruption of service

I am creating a web site with a link to a wiki page. What is the best way to phrase a direction to my users that they should edit the wiki while their browser is set to Mozilla (if they are on a Mac) or Internet Explorer (if they are on a PC). Is browser the right term for Mozilla and IE? Should I put a notice on the home page that the site is best viewed with a certain browser? I have never seen that done, but experience has taught me that sometimes it make a big difference in the functionality of a site.
Thanks,
Melinda

Melinda, Browser is the right term. I would extend the recommendation to Firefox, then Mozilla and IE. Where Firefox works best. Some wiki's do have a short piece of text on the home page that says something like: "you can view this wiki with any browser, but to edit its pages please use ....".  -- Ken Tyler 1/9/08

I need to delete a Wiki that I started as an example for someone - http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/vims_bulletin_board_for_housing/vims_bulletin_board_for_housing. Using Firefox 2.1, I can check 'delete' under control and click Save Changes but the wiki never goes away.

Thanks, Dave Hewitt

Dave,

Thanks for reporting this. A variable was being looked for in the wrong place so the template did not realize a delete was supposed to be happening. "Delete" should work now.

-- ken tyler 1/4/2008

Ken, worked fine. Delete successful. Thanks  - Dave (1/4/08)

Sorry to bother you, but our discussion pages are still unaccessible. What are we doing wrong?

Sherri -- Media Lit Protest Songs

Sherri, no bother... i'll take a look and report back --

If I go to http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/media_lit_protest_songs I can enter discussion on different pages, using either IE or firefox.  What exactly do you mean by "unaccessible" ?

 ken tyler

What's the best way to save a wiki to my computer? There was a link from the manual but it seems to be broken.

-- there should be a link in the control panel of your wiki.... what is the name of your wiki ? --- ken tyler

For everyone having problems with discussion pages. The discussion pages did indeed have a bug that makes them lose track of which page they are discussion for. We think we have this fixed now and discussion should stay on the page it belongs on. Anyone who has discussion that got put into the wrong page can let us know and we'll move it to where it belongs. Just tell us which wiki/page the discussion is on and which wiki/page it should be moved to. -- ken tyler

Thanks for the information, Ken.  A few more questions.
Can I update to a blue account on the students' wikis without having to create new ones for them---If so--how?

Whitney, with a blue account you can apply passwords to as many wikis as you like. If you upgrade your account to blue you can go to each student wiki and apply a different password. Then only the people that know the password for that student's wiki will be able to enter it.

Even if we have a free wiki----Each class has a different password for the account, but when they are using the discussion button---their discussion jumps from one class to another---shouldn't their discussion stay on the page they put it on?  Sorry for all these questions.

Don't be sorry. It turned out there was a problem with the discussion pages. I was just a little slow to realize it. It should be fixed now. See our offer above to move discussion around that got misplaced.

Can you tell me how to delete an image that I accidently put in the Image folder?

If you go down below the editor while editing any page you can change from using the FCKeditor 2.4 to using the FCKeditor 2.3. The image directory for 2.3 will let you delete images.

My students are choosing layouts or backgrounds for their wikis---and when they insert the html code into the Source section of the tool bar----it is literally covering up their pages----any suggestions?

Can you give me the wiki name for one of these wikis so I can take a look and see what the problem is. Sometimes wildly colored backgrounds make it almost impossible to see the text of the wiki page, but there might be some HTML problem with what they're pasting in also, and that we can probably resolve.

Is it possible to delete former wikis?  IF so---how?

If the wiki owner is logged in there should be an option in the control panel to delete the wiki. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.

Thanks for all your help----and quick responses---it is very helpful when trying to lead a group of students.

Whitney

Hi,

We have started a wiki in our media literacy class called Media Lit. Protest Songs. Most students have been able to add a page to my main directory, but when students posted comments last night, they disappeared. Either that, or we just don't know where to look for them! Can you help us find them? This is based on the lesson plan from ReadWriteThink.org.

Thank you,

Sherri Cook

Sherri, see my comments above. There was indeed a problem with discussion pages...its fixed now and I tested it on a couple of your pages to make sure I could enter discussion and that the discussion stayed on the page I entered it on. -- ken tyler

Hi Ken---I have used the wikis in my middle school classroom for 4 years and I am still experiencing some issues that I need help resolving.  I find that this is a very useful tool WHEN it is working correctly.  First, I choose to create ONE wiki account under my name per class to protect the identity of the students.  Each class has a different password---But if you type in one password---it brings me to wikis in other classes.  What should I do about this?  Also, sometimes the site is down and none of the kids can get on to work on their wikis.  We are still in the beginning of our project, but I am hoping you can help me with these issues.

Thank you---Whitney

Whitney,

Thanks for your questions. It looks like you don't have a paid account. When you create a new account the password is just for access to your account. It does not control who can enter or edit your wikis. All the wikis you create while logged into one account belong to that account, and links to them show up when you are logged in. To do what you want you would need a blue account, which would let you assign a different password (not your account password) to each wiki. Then no one could enter or edit the wiki without knowing the password and that would give you the protection for the students you are looking for. We now offer this feature on a wiki by wiki basis ($2.50 @ month for each wiki) or on an account basis ($10 @ month and you can use passwords on as many wikis as you want).

We know that its a problem if the site is down and try our best to check for errors and keep things stable. We have a monitoring service that checks the site every 5 minutes and reports monthly on our up-time ratio. You can see the past could of years statistics here. We're running above 99% now and we have improved steadily over the last few years.

Hello again, Ken...Well, only part of the first page from the old wiki transferred and now the old wiki is gone.  Yikes!  Help!  Thanks again, Nancy Waters

Nancy, maybe we need to talk on the phone and straighten this out. I see 157 pages in the old wiki, although the front page is blank... as it was when i first looked at it. Do you have skype? or can you give me a call at 510.384.7321 ?  -- ken

Hello, I tried to copy my wiki from last year to re-use it this year with some changes.  I was unsuccessful.  What did I do wrong?  Old wiki:  http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/battle_of_the_books_-_2007/battle_of_the_books_-_2007  New wiki: http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/harlan_battle_of_the_books_-_2008/harlan_battle_of_the_books_-_2008?wikiPageId=1277715  The new wiki is blank.  Help, please!  Thanks, Nancy Waters

Nancy, your original wiki had one of the older layouts. The "copy wiki" link in that layout only copies the wiki's style into a new wiki. In the new layouts there is a checkbox on the copy wiki form that also allows you to copy the wiki's contents. I've copied the pages from your old wiki into the new one for you in this case.

Hi,

I am trying to edit this page, but when I switch to the edit mode, a blank page shows up.  In addition, I am a teacher and I use your service for my students so that they can decrease their homework load.  Unfortunately they will often try to do their portion of the assignment on some of the previous chapter pages and find that when they click on Save Your Changes, their changes are not saved.  Can you all help?

Thank you very much.-

We just put in a new editor, FCKEditor version 2.4.4. It should be the default editor when you students start a new session. This version should do a better job of parsing HTML in their pages and reduce the problem of saving changes that do no get saved. -- ken tyler

Hello,

I have one page cann't show up but it worked previously. Following is the error I received, could you help me with this issue?

BlueDragon Internal Server Error
The page you were executing caused an internal BlueDragon server error
This error has been logged to bderror29891.html. Please contact the Administrator

Thank you very much!

S.W.

S.W.  We changed some of the page parsing code to try and deal better with foreign characters in page names... this page had lots of [....] square brackets around things that did not appear to be page names....I think they were in the copy that was pasted into the page.  The contents of those square brackets blew up our new code. For the time being I have escaped the square brackets so that seedwiki will not try to process them as page names and this seems to let the page display ( to escape square brackets put ! in front of them   ex. ![....!] )  We'll try and figure out what in the page made the code blow up and build something in to handle such cases in the future. -- ken tyler

Thanks Ken for fixing things and letting me know what's going on. I did copy it from somewhere else. Thanks again!

Oct 23 - Ken, name of the wiki is TN_Tech_IA_2008. Also, when I try to save edits for http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/ttu_instrumentalanalysis/faas_matrix_effect_analysis?t I repeatedly get "stack overflow on line: 22" There are only minor changes that I need to edit, but it seems that no change is accepted. Thanks, Mona

Mona, that error message almost always means that there is something in the HTML of the page that the editor can't handle. The solution is to copy the content to the page into a text editor (like notepad). That will strip out all the formating. Then copy the content back into the editor and the page should then save without the error. The catch is that you have to reapply the formatting. We're about to introduce a newer version of the editor that claims to have fixed this particular bug....

Thanks Ken for fixing things and letting me know what's going on. My new pages are coming up without _ between words now, but the old ones still have these - can I change this myself or will it happen 'automatically'? Thanks again,

Ken,

having trouble with my wiki
http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/schriftkompetenz

Internal links do not work anymore. Maybe this has to do with another problem; all those new wiks (also this page)have a new design - my wiki is still looking as it did all the time ... do I have to change something: I'd be grateful for an answer. Thanks.
Odile

Odile, we deliberately do not change old wikis when we introduce new designs... some people don't like unsuspected changes sprung on them. You can change to any one of the new templates by going to your wiki's control panel and clicking on the "change style template" link. This takes you to a page where you can view the different templates and apply one to your wiki if you like it. -- ken

October 19: Still on about changing my wiki name - prob with deleting or copying is that I do not have any control panel function showing. I log on, and see these functions, for instance on this page, but when I access my wiki page (TN_Tech_AI_2008) they are not present. Thanks.

Mona

Mona, what is the name of your wiki ? -- ken tyler

October 18: A few weeks ago I added a new wiki instead of a new page (being new to this and not reading the instrutions properly). When I sign in as the owner to try and delete it, it does not work. The wiki is called 'rubbish scanned by recycling police' and I added it as a separate wiki instead of as an article for Seventeen infobank - it's here and I want to get rid of it:

http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/rubbish_scanned_by_recycling_police/rubbish_scanned_by_recycling_police

I also have not been able to delete certain pages (again, signed in as the owner who should be able to do so). For example, I was showing someone how to add a new page and now cannot remove the example! It is listed as new_page with the content something like asd:flamsafhkj !!! Why can I not delete this, what am I missing!?
http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/seventeen_infobank/new_page

Lastly, the new pages I have been adding to the infobank are all appearing with underscores between the words instead of spaces. Please can you tell me how to stop this happening? I don't think I have the hang of this at all, everything just keps going wrong, please help me! Thank you,

Lindsey, thanks for the detailed report. The delete wiki function is broken... we're in the process of fixing it. In the meantime I've deleted the rubbish wiki for you. The page deletes in the directory should be working again... I've just logged in as you and run a test in your wiki. The _ in the names of new pages was a bug that we created in trying to fix another bug... that is fixed now as well and new page names should appear normally.  -- ken tyler

October 17: Yesterday, I looked in on all my wikis and found that several seem to have developed errors in the menus(?) Yes, removing those buttons would have removed their errors, but the reason those buttons were triggering those errors was our fault in the first place.

Oct 16: Help friends - I misnamed a wiki - now I would like to copy it, and contents, to a new page (deleting old), but following directions does not seem to work - I log on, access the misnamed page, but see no "copy" button. Thanks.

Mona, if you're logged in to your seedwiki account you should be able to go to the wikis control panel and rename it to the new name you want, rather than having to copy it. The copy wiki option should appear in your account menu when you're logged in. What is the name of the wiki you are trying to copy ?

I use both IE and Firefox.  I cleared cache in both and will let you know if I have additional problems

The only thing we can figure out is that the editor content was being cached somehow on your local machine. We've added a random number to the url that calls for the editor and if that was the problem, the random change in the URL should keep the editor from pulling an old version out of your browser cache. This is just a guess at what is happening... when we edit the page (repeatedly) we can't get the problem to reoccur. What browser are you using ? -- ken

Hey Ken- Thanks for help here. I, but here is what happens-  Go ahead and change my wiki page if you want to experiment on it

At http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/miller/slave_ship_diary?wikiPageId=1210268 when I click to it from www.seedwiki.com/wiki/miller.. As you can see it is a table

When  I click on edit ( and I have used the _change_style_template to a template I don't really like to get another option on edit buttons) t I get - an earlier version to edit.   And here is the final problem.  This doesn't always happen!!!  Probably I will be able to edit newest version if I go away from seedwiki for an hour or so and then come back .

Thanks Ken.

Joan

Hi Ken and Stephen,

October 15 PM pacific

When I edit a wiki, after the first two edits or so if I click on edit page, the screen shows the first edited version, not the most recent . This is happening on my wiki miller, especially  the Slave Ship Diary page.

Versions link on sub- pages retrieves main wiki page .

We tried to duplicate this. If you look at the page how_to_add_another_owner_for_your_wiki versions... you'll see that I edited the page 7 times, each time adding a ".' to the "." at the end of the first sentence. We can't get the problem to re-occur. We did make some corrections yesterday and perhaps they also fixed this. If this happens to you again, please let us know.  -- ken tyler

October 15:  I'm encountering a strange problem with my wiki control files (the files with an underscore before them), particularly the header and a top navigation bar I added.  The wiki is http://nightrideradio.org/wiki/nightride.  Where yesterday an include statement BRACKET_includepage|_top_menuBRACKET loaded the top navigation, now is replaced with a link that says anchor label.  The menu itself (http://nightrideradio.org/wiki/nightride/_top_menu) is no longer appearing.  And yet looking in the source of both the header and the navbar, no "anchor label" link is there and no edits to the page have been made to change it either.

A mystery?!  Is this a bug in seedwiki related to the fact that my navigation include file starts with an underscore?

Wes, There are 2 uses of the underscore in seedwiki. One is for "system pages", like _menu, that are built in and used by the wiki to display itself. The other is to take a normal page and add an underscore to it in order to make it act like a widget. So if you had a page named "top menu", you could put [_top_menu] in another page and expect the contents of the "top menu" page to show up there. Creating a content page with an underscore in front of its name was an option we did not take into account. I don't know why it worked before and has stopped working now. We will try to improve the documentation on this. If you have a page named "_top_menu", then using [_top_menu] in a page should give you a link to the _top_menu page, not the contents of that page.

-- ken tyler

ALSO:  I'm observing the problem reported below where the Versions link gives me versions for only the front page.  -- we've fixed this one

  October 14

Hi Ken and Stephen,

I am having trouble with my wiki miller. When I try to edit  the page Civil War Cost - Was It Worth It I get linked instead to main wiki page. I actually created Civil War Cost - Was It Worth It  page by copying Cost of Civil War  page, which was doing same thing ( reverting to main page when I pressed edit) . At some point I must have copied an edit link that is now embedded.  Can you help?

Thanks Joan

Joan, We made some changes to the menus this morning and this was a bug... thanks for reporting it so quickly.... should be fixed and working fine now.

-- ken tyler

Ken,

Thanks. Edit is working now. However, the versions link on Civil War Cost - Was It Worth It links to the versions of the main page - miller- not the actual versions of Civil War Cost - Was It Worth It.  Is that another bug?

October 13, 2007

Hi Ken:

The page_files_link does seem to be working on my wiki (Coastal_Governance) and others. I can access files only by going to individual pages in the directory but not from the page itself or from the "files" link at the bottom of the directory.

Thanks,

John K.

John, sorry, same issue as Joan's above... we changed the mechanism that loads the menus and some of the menu widgets weren't too happy under the new setup. The files page should be working in coastal governance now. -- ken tyler

Hi, I'm new to this so may be a silly question. When I save my changes after going into edit mode it doesn't save the colors and formatting. Then when I go back to the edit mode it appears in the colors and formatting that I wasn't able to save. Thanks, Ellen

Hi, Ellen, that was a funny one... you were right, the text of the header was red in the editor...but there was nothing in the HTML to make it red when it saved. I selected the text in the editor and applied the color red... and now it saves as red.    --- ken tyler

Thanks Ken, it definitely looks better now!  But I still have an issue with formatting; why does it show up in the "edit" mode as all indented appropriately, but then in the saved version the indenting is totally different? Thanks, Ellen

Hi guys...strange problem today with my wiki at elixr.merlot.org

I updated the Projects page and the subheadings disappeared. When I view the previous version, dated Oct 2, it shows up fine. Then when I save it unchanged, the subheadings disappear again.

Any thoughts as to why the same page would display differently after a save?

Hi Ken and Stephen:

Is there any simple way to change the page association for uploaded files - I uploaded a bunch at various times and from various pages, and hadn't realized that they can be associated with a page until it was too late.

Thanks!

Rich

Rich, got us again... there is no way to do this now but to delete the files from the pages they were uploaded to and re-upload them to other pages.... you can use the _downloadfile widget to place a link on any page

The widget takes three arguments file_name=noName.doc|link_label=no label|file_wikipagename=no page .... so it would look like [_downloadfile|somefile.xls|some file|some page name]   including the 3rd argument

lets it download a file from any page in your wiki. If you leave off the 3rd argument it assumes it should download a file that was uploaded to the page you put the widget on. This is a problem that has not come up before...

although we realize that uploading the files to individual pages causes problems. We have considered just having all the files get uploaded "to the wiki" rather than to individual pages.  Again, if you can send us a list of

files and the pages you want them switched to, we can do that in the database for you. -- ken and stephan

Dear Ken and Stephen:

I've been having a problem adding a new page to my wiki, stage management at ccm.  When I click "save your changes" none of the changes get saved.  The last time I tried to build a new page and save it I got this error message:  "Stack overflow at line: 22"  Huh?  The page had a cut and paste out of a word document and from just the clipboard.  Please help.  Michele (and thanks for the help on the printing problem on ccm show pages - I haven't checked it yet but will soon.)

Michele,  stack overflow is almost always a sign of HMTL that the editor cannot interpret... try using the "paste from word" paste icon in the editor toolbox... if that doesn't work paste into notepad first, then copy from notepad and paste into your page... that will strip out ALL the formatting.  - ken tyler

THANKS - I tried doing the paste again from my computer at home and it worked fine - could have been a stack problem with my work computer? - thanks for responding.  Michele

Ken and Stephen - this one slipped through cracks:  ;-)

October 2, 2007, 11:08pm EST

Dear Ken and Stephen:

Is there a way to globally change the page description and keywords for pages that already exist in a wiki, including system pages and "how to" pages?

Thanks, RIch

Rich, sorry, we came up the the answer and forgot to post it... you can edit your _layout page and insert page description and keyword text there that will appear for all the pages requested from your wiki.

edit the section of your _layout page that looks like this

<title>#titlecontent#</title>
<meta name="Description" content="#descriptioncontent#">
<meta name="Keywords" content="#keywordscontent#">
If you insert a title, description or keywords before the #, then the text you insert will be included on all your pages, and any additional title you assign to individual pages
will be added where the #titlecontent# variable is in the layout... same for #descriptioncontent# and #keywordcontent#.
If you don't want to have individual titles, descriptions or keywords... then you can remove the #...# variablenames and just enter the description, keywords and titles you
want the site to have.
We have no way to do a mass update of indvidual page titles, keywords and descriptions. If that is what you want... to get a running start so to speak, but then to customize
each page individually... you can email us the description, keywords and title you want to start with and we'll update your pages in the database.

Dear Ken and Stephen:

We're having the same problem that Bird Tower mentions below about printing:  the menu (left and right) and header print in addition to the content; (1) is there a way to simply print content and/or (2) is there a way to put a "click here for a printer friendly version"?  My wiki is "ccm show pages".  Can you help?  Many thanks, Michele K.

 Michele,

We've decided to make the print style sheet editable in your wiki, just like the regular style sheet is... it will take us a couple of days to implement... but then you can change it to exclude the menu and header..

Dear Ken and Stephen:

I know the problem's with me and not with seedwiki--I know I'm making some hairball error--but I'd appreciate some advice, please.  I have created a wiki for a class project (wikiDic), and while I, the owner of the wiki, can edit pages, no one else can.  I've combed the permissions and controls sections to see if I've disabled non-owner editing, but I don't think I have.  Even when I create a dummy account and then add that dummy as an owner, the original owner me is still the only one who can edit.  HELP!  Please.  Thank you.  Tracy

September 12, 2007     Ken,             Hi there!  We are part of the Kindness Crew of Victoria and we had a website with seedwiki called compassion.seedwiki.com and we can't seem to find it anymore.  We admittedly have not accessed it over the past year and wonder does it simply disappear?  Can it somehow be resurrected?  Is there someone who can help us?????  Can you please contact us at peacebearer@care2.com asap!   Hugs and big thanks - Mark and Stacy Sherman

Sites are removed if they go a year without any changes... but perhaps we can find the past page versions for you. Let us take a look.

-ken and stephan

To Dave and Laura,

Thanks for your postings here! There was some sort of error that was keeping notifications from being removed once they were sent. We've fixed it now and we think that should fix the problem of the endlessly repeating notifications.

--ken and stephan

I have the same change notification issue as Laura on my wiki (Monticello English), and would love for that to be resolved there as well. Also, My wiki seems not to be able to be edited from a Mac machine. Is there some setting I have in place that I need to change. It looks like some wikis can be edited by Macs, since I'm writing this on a Mac now. But if I click on "Edit Page" on my wiki, the actual window with the page editor does not appear. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave symbolic name =

Dave, we are still working on the over active notifications... hopefully that will be solved soon. If you're on a mac make sure you're using firefox... as the javascript for the editor does not work on some other mac browsers.
-- ken tyler

Thanks, Ken.  I'll look into that.

I made a change to one of my wikis ("Peace Resources") and have the feature turned on where changes are e-mailed to me.  Now I'm getting change notifications (I think for the same one change) over and over again, once every hour.  I've received about 20 of these over the past two days.  At first they said "change notification for 9/4/07" and then they changed to saying "change notification for 9/5/07" but otherwise are identical.  I believe I just made one change on 9/4/07.  No one else has made any further changes -- so there's something amiss that keeps sending these notices out every hour.

Thanks!
Laura     symbolic name =
Laura, thanks for such a detailed report... clearly the change report is not being removed from the change stack once the email is sent.. we'll get it fixed and stop those annoying emails. -- ken tyler

Thanks, Ken.  And wow, I just received a change notification for writing this help note too!  I feel possessed...!

9/7/07 update:  They seem to have stopped now.  Thanks again!  -Laura

I'm running into the "link spamming" trap when trying to put a flickr photo badge on a page.
Any way I can modify the code to allow me to do it?  Or can you adjust your filters?

Rico     symbolic name =
trash orchestra

Rico,
Our link spammers were using the javascript function 'document write' to get around our spam filters and the flker code was using that function, that's why it couldn't save. Instead of removing that restriction, we've made you a widget called _flkr_badge which takes the url generated from the flckr site as an argument.

Here is the widget:
[_flkr_badge|http://www.flickr.com/apps/badge/badge_iframe.gne?zg_bg_color=ffffff&zg_context=in%2Fpool-trashorchestra%2F&zg_group_id=396234%40N25
|width=400|height=500|background_color=ffcc00]
symbolic name =

The only catch is that you must replace the '+zg_bg_color+' variable with the hexadecimal color without the pound sign.
You can find the color in the code you generate just one line up from where the url is given (see below).
var zg_bg_color = 'ffffff';

For anyone else looking at these instructions, please note we'll try to simplify the process and write up some further instructions in the seedwiki book.

-- Ken & Stephan

Thanks for figuring that out.  Part of the fun of having the JavaScript is I was going to change the size of the badge and other parameters.  Perhaps, you could give me two additional (optional) parameters to the widget for vertical and horizontal size?  -Rico

Rico, I made it so you can change the  height, width and background color....doesn't seem to make much difference in what is displayed... just makes the background bigger  -- ken tyler

You're right.  I should have known better!  The code that produces the flickr badge is produced by the flash on the flickr site and is unmodifiable by mere mortals.

I started using Seedwiki in 2004 but the pages my students created then have disappeared (eg http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/Week%202%20Vocabulary/acquaintance.htm ) Also some pages from 2005 have disappeared http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/blue_group_term_1_week_1_vocabulary/blue_group_term_1_week_1_vocabulary.cfm is OK but the link to Week 2 doesn't work and my list of pages it seems that Weeks 2 - 6 have gone. Really, very nice ideas come along with seedwiki. In the meanwhile the title of a page is not displayed in the browser and nobody can view the source of a HTML-Page. Only an empty page apears. I think the bots of the searchengines have the same problem. Why is it possible to edit the Title-Tag in the page editor when your genius Software does not display these informations? Have You ever thougt about SEO? Or should no page on seedwiki be optimised for the searchengines?

Walter,
We're sorry we're not meeting your expectations.

The source of the html is there, it's just that there is some white space at the top of the page. We are in the middle of redoing how seedwiki formats a page and the normal guards that suppress that white space have been removed while we are working. Sometimes we forget to put the suppression back in between our work sessions.  Technically, this is not what the html validation service is complaining about, but we are aware that this is a usability problem. Thanks for calling our attention to it.

Do note that your screenshot shows "5 errors" for your wiki home page on seedwiki.  Also note that when I go on Google (without even using the submit button) and use the same validation service -- it shows me 50 errors, and when I go on Amazon -- it shows me 1390 errors.

We recently gave all wiki owners access to the structural HTML of their wiki (in addition to the CSS and the page content, which we had offerred before). It looks like as part of these code changes some pages were not displaying their title, or some pages had a blank title. We have done what we can to remedy that. We did check, and now setting a title for the page in the editor seems to work. If you have a wiki it's not working in please let us know what the wiki is so we can track this down further. More than a year ago we stopped changing people's wiki's everytime we upgrade the general seedwiki code...so there are many older versions of wikis on seedwiki and some of them work a little different than the newer ones.

We're always glad for ideas about how to let those user's that care about SEO optimize their wikis as much as they want. Since its a complex and ever changing field we appreciate any feedback we get from users for whom it is a real priority. Much of what we do on seedwiki comes from things we learned from concerned wiki owners.

What do we need to do so that the formatting in the edit window matches the page view? See www.seedwiki.com/wiki/rocopedia.

I have been using the mailto widget fairly extensively for some time. Has the code been modified sometime in the last year? It seems to be misbehaving in some cases now that I don't remember being a problem before. In particular, it seems to have difficulties with the ".org" domain. Either it simply treats the widget as text in the generated page or it has some strange "repetitions" connected by "-->". I have been working around it with HTML links (i.e., <a href="">). Is anyone else having problems? Not sure that is the only problem. Sometimes non-org domains are treated as text. I have also noticed that once it encounters a mailto widget it can't handle, some following mailto widgets seem to fail as well.

John,
You're right. There was a bug when widgets were repeated on a page. We fixed that. We can't find anything that might be associated with .org... let us know if that happens again. Thanks for reporting this. -- ken tyler

Thanks Ken,  The problem page seems to be working now. I guess the .org address was just the first that was repeated and had the strange "-->" connectors. John

Hi: I'm using my wiki for a community calendar but the calendar doesn't seem to function as it presents. This is the first time that I am using seedwiki for a class.  Three of the group members are having no problem uploading their part to the document, however there are two of us that are getting an error every time we try to edit the page.  The error that we both get is Overstock at Line 22.  What do we need to do to be able to edit the page?
Thanks.
Amy
Amy, this almost always means that somehow the underlying HTML for the page has gotten into a state where the visual editor can no longer parse it. When it can't parse the page it can't save changes. The solution is to copy the content of the page and paste it into a text editor (like NotePad on Windows), which will remove all the formatting, then delete the page content and paste what you copied into the text editor back in. This will remove all the formatting on the page... but it will usually make it accept changes again.... Then you have to reapply the formatting you want.

Hello,

I'm getting CFRML bug reports when I try to edit my wiki http://peshot.seedwiki.com (Managed to edit it anyway), trying to report a bug (It says I needed to allow popups and had the red and white box at the bottom of the page). I know it's not me. I even got the stupid CFRML error when editing here. It pops up on a separate page here so I can still edit. It is annoying. Here it is.

How do I rename my wiki?

I have just made a simple mistake and not capitalised a word in the title of my Wiki. This looks unprofessional. How do I change it?

Thanks,

Nick

Nick, if you click on the "control panel" link, you should see a "change wiki name" link that will open up a little form where you can rename the wiki. -- ken tyler

Nick,
If that doesn't work for you, change the name to something else -- then change it back to the name you want.
Before a name is changed, the database is checked to see if its url name space is not already taken.

Hi Ken and/or Stephan,

When I log into my account, the wikis I have created  appear as a list on the left hand side. But, these titles are cut off from the front  For example

Presidential Decisions has become esidential Decisions

Okey has become key.

This happens  on several monitor sizes.

Is there anything I can do?

Thanks

Joan, can you tell us which wiki you are doing this in ? we may need to fix the CSS for the menu a little. -- ken tyler

Hi Ken,

Sorry I was gone for a week so delayed in seeing your answer.  When I am on my wikis ie. http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/schoenmyths1/  the names don't get cut off.  It is only when I am on home page of seedwiki.com and log in there.  I actually can live with that.

When I print pages off of my wiki, Bird Tower, I am no longer just seeing the content pane, i.e. the menu and header are also being printed.
This didn't used to be the case.  How can I fix this?

Thanks,
BT

BT, let us take a look. It sounds like a problem with the "print" style sheet. -- ken tyler

I am getting some unexpected (for me) behavior in using the _insertcomments widget. The example is this page. Any obvious problems?

John F.
John, we'll take a look in the morning and see what's up  --- ken tyler
John, you can only have one _addcomments widget on a page. You can use more than one _insertcomments widgets.....but each widget requires a unique name. You used the _insertcomments widget, but gave it the arguments that would be expected by _addcomments... missing the name. _insertcomments should look like this:
  [_insertcomments|issue 1|10|60|20|anyone]
This is a problem with the documentation... I see that only _addcomments is listed on the editor page, and that probabaly mislead you. I fixed the insert comments on your sample page and I'll fix the documentation. Thanks for asking this question. It pointed out a difficulty with the documentation we did not realize and will help many other people as a result.

I have been getting a lot of CFML errors complaining abut missing wiki page record count. On some occasions (generally a missing double quote), it has been resolved by saving in source mode as opposed to WYSIWYG mode. However, this doesn't always work. Even in the case where I have little or no formatting. The page on which the link to the unsavable page occurs is a page that was involved in the concurrent editor problem described below. Any suggestions?

John
John,
This was a bug caused by our efforts to solve the problem below... this bug in saving a new page should be fixed now.

On another note, the error you reported below about the 'hide" not working should be fixed now too
ken tyler

Thanks Ken. You've been very responsive. However, the "hide" problem is another John. There are just too many of us.

I have multiple wikis and frequently have multiple edits going. I noticed recently that a page being edited from wiki 1 can overwritten by the contents of an edited page from wiki 2 on save edits. The changes do not appear in the page they should appear in. Apparently having more then one edit going is a problem and the state data  is not adequate to distinguish the two concurrent edits. Fortunately, backups are saving me from substantial losses.

John

John, we are working on this problem... the saves were using the session data to know which wiki to save to...we've changed them to check that the page being saved in actually in the wiki that the session thinks is current. This may still cause a problem if you have multiple wikis open at the same time in the same browser. As you go from wiki to wiki in the different tabs it changes your state data... if you also have an editor open and try to save the edit after such changes then it was causing a problem because it would save using the new version of the state data... rather than the state data that was current when you opened the editor.

A more sophisticated approach would still allow you to do that... by reestablishing the state that was current when you opened the editor... it may be that we can figure out how to do that... right now we have just tried to stop the save from writing the pages into the wrong wiki's.  This will mean that saves that previously overwrote a page on the wrong wikis will now throw and error when you attempt to save them.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. It helps us a lot to deal with these kinds of issues.

ken tyler

Please tell me how to delete my account.  I first got a free account, then used Paypal to "upgrade" to blue.  However, the upgrade was a disaster--took my money, but I got no more features for it.  So I've attempted to cancel in Paypal, and now I want to delete my account here.  Not surprisingly, there is no REMOVE ACCOUNT link.  Please tell me what I have to do to get completely away from this thing, and out of your records.  (sparrow@monmouth.com)  It's even too stupid to remove a wiki after I deleted it.

or you can put a [_files] widget in your menu (the _menu page is listed on the control panel tab of the directory) and people can click on that link to see the files uploaded to each individual page.

When I try to edit my style sheet it automatically gives me the "text area" editor and won't let me switch, and I cannot edit the style sheet. The style sheet is here. http://seedwiki.com/wiki/whole_terrain_resources_for_writers/_style_sheet

Thanks for your assistance. - WT

I can't get edit any of my style sheets. I just get this

and even if I click save your changes to restore a previous version, it will not save.

HELP!

Sorry, we've been swamped lately and are a little behind in fixing bugs... this one came from a new code editor we're building for ourselves that messed up the <textarea tags that the style sheet uses as an editor... should be fixed now. -- ken tyler

I still can't publish my website. The control panel only has a publish website upgrade form link not a publish website link.

Hello,

I'm getting an error when I try to access the 'control panel and how to' tab on my wiki which is preventing access to the 'number of hits' and 'number of visitors' functions. Any ideas how this can be fixed?

The wiki is here: http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/whole_terrain_resources_for_writers/whole_terrain_resources_for_writers

Thanks,

Nathaniel

Nathaniel, We've just fixed the control panel.

I can't seem to publish my wiki. I go to publish in the control panel and the publish wiki link does not open. www.seedwiki.com/wiki/lindbergh_middle_school_library

Nu

Nu,
We fixed that one by fixing the control panel. Thanks for the heads up.

I am giving a workshop on the educational use of wikis and I want to have participants collaboratively edit my page. But when other users try to make changes, they aren't saved. Why is that? Do you have to subscribe to the wiki, or the page? I have a free account. Here is my wiki home page:

Richard

 Richard,

Sometimes something happens on a page and the visual editor can no longer parse the underlying HTML. When it can't parse the HTML it can no longer save changes. I have restored your page by 1) clicking on edit and copying the page content 2) pasting it into notepad (which strips out all the formatting) 3) copying the stripped text from notepage 4) pasting it back into the page 5) remaking the links and resizing the title to large. This tactic always restores the page to a state where it can be edited... but you have to redo the formatting. We have never been able to figure out just what causes this problem... sometimes its pasting text in from Word, sometimes I've seen it happen when users are just using the visual editor itself. -- ken tyler
