Uh Oh by Robert Fulghum

Uh Oh is a collection of stories from Robert Fulghums life, he uses random everyday occurences to analyze his own and others psyche. Much of the book is him wondering what life would be like if things were a little different. For instance he wonders what kind of pants would we have to wear if we glowed like fireflys.Fulghum looks at life from both sides of the refrigerator door" and so he does using something like meatloaf and a can of old spam to explain human interaction. He manages to look at grief , and loss without losing the upbeat humor that makes his books so appealing. Or in another story he makes up a secretary because he feels he needs one only to find that everyone wants to meet her and he can find no way to explain his need to have made up this person without looking just a little bit crazy. This is where the words Uh Oh come in handy. As the book review states "In this book the words Uh Oh go far beyond being just a randomly uttered sound, they are an expression of something gone wrong. These two syllables become an extension of our body language, a way to convey with simplicity an extremely complex meaning. Uh Oh means we understand something is wrong but we believe we can deal with whatever we have come up against. Uh Oh not only explains something past but also can deal with the future, It is like saying 'not this again!' but can at the same time express in excess of what that phrase states. As the author says "Uh Oh in this sense is a frame of mind" and after reading his book you can understand where this sentiment comes from. -Jennifer Isenburg
