Pi, The Movie

Pi is a sometimes confusing, surreal flick about a brilliant mathematician, one Max Cohen, who believes that mathematics is the language of nature and anything may be predicted given enough variables and knowledge of the underlying pattern.  Why studying the stock market he discovers a 216-digit number that appears to be the clue to everything.  Soon a variety of characters become interested, including his ex-teacher, kabalistic Jews, and a Wall Street firm.  Each group has its own personal agenda and tries to incorporate Max's genius at number theory into its designs.
As Max works on his theory, the stress builds and his migraines--the result of staring into the sun at the age of six--become more frequent and severe.  His obsession with numbers lead him to avoid human contacts and he is unable to do anything but be pulled deeper into his mathematics.  The only way to break the cycle is to give up his passion for numbers.
The film is shot in washed out black and white and with an often wavering camera.  Coupled with Max's frenetic movements and sometimes ambiguous storyline, a paranoid atmosphere is developed.  All in all, an interesting film for a curious mind.
