Captain Ron, a movie of its own style and personality, is a movie that no one person should go through life without seeing. It came out in 1992 and is only becoming more and more of a great time. Captain Ron is a movie that is vibrant with feeling and emotion. It is humorous beyond control, taking full advantage of the outdoors, through sailing the open waters of the Caribbean while comically finding a mess on each Island they visit or end up on. Captain Ron, a blatant comedy, Features Kurt Russell as Captain Ron Rico who is like a lime to a Corona. Kurt Russell Makes Captain Ron come alive with color and almost instinctively seeming, portrays a delusional captain who has definitely spent way to much time in the sun having one to many drinks in his lifetime. Martin Short is the other main character of the movie who owns the boat and was trying to get away from the city life by going down to the Caribbean and hiring Captain Ron. Together these two characters play off of each other perfectly creating a combination that is irreplaceable. To state their relationship in brief, Martin Short is basically a pushover whose sanity slowly disappears as Captain Ron Rico takes command of the ship along with his family. If you like the outdoors, adventure, and stupid humor like most Auburn students I know, then this movie is one that I recommend you sit back and drink a couple beers to. It will with out a doubt have you and your friends cracking up with laughter and only make your day that much better. Movies that have almost the same type of stupid humor as Captain Ron include, Dumb and Dumber, and most Ben Stiller movies. The humor of Captain Ron, as I said before, is in its own class and is not as far fetched as the actually hilarious examples mentioned. The unique style makes the plot a lot more plausible and gives the comedic parts of the movie an extra kick and is done so through showing every day squabbles of life, scene by scene.
The humor in Captain Ron is constant. Whether it is Captain Ron Rico checking the women of the family out through their dads own cam recorder or him dancing the mambo with the wife of the family on a guerilla infested island, the comedy does not cease for anything not even the dangerous moments of movie when lives are at stake. Almost like Harry and Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber, Ron Rico in Captain Ron is hilarious through his ignorance and every action provided through it. The way this comedy is set up would not be the same if it did not have the ever so trusting typical family only involved with work and school. They do not know the rules of the sea and their cautious city lifestyles do not match that of the wild Caribbean. This sets everything up for a comical disaster. With everything in place Captain Ron is what makes the movie come alive with laughter through Kurt Russell’s natural talent as an actor and his carefully setup role that ties everything together. The innocent, forgiving family members, once acquainted with the tropical lifestyle, are able to kick off their shoes and let their true emotions come out. All of the accidents that would happen to people in a new style of living do happen to this family and instead of being helped out by Ron Rico, he is the one at the beginning of every problem they encounter as if he is more hopeless than they would be on their own. Besides for the beautifully set up plot and perfectly laid out actions of each character, the acting as realistic as our own lives. Kurt Russell as Captain Ron is brilliant and could not play the character any better. Martin Short is nonetheless perfect in playing the naive dad of the family because he is small in stature and always has that unsure, what is going to happen next, look on his face. Kurt Russell had the character nailed from the raspy voice, to the fake cocky strut of a sea captain who knew he had nothing to strut about. From the acting to Captain Ron’s escapades on the boat, everything comes together in sync leaving pure comedy.
Do you like to drink? I know Auburn students do, and this is another big reason why you will thoroughly enjoy this movie. People drink to relax and have fun. This movie can be watched with extreme ease. There are no mind-boggling plot lines or situations that require intense focus. If you need to grab a beer grab one and drink it with Captain Ron as he unwinds and figures out the easiest way to get the next task done, if the next task is even on the agenda yet. When somebody is drinking in movie, and you are a drinker yourself, watching that person drink in the movie can be very enticing. This is another reason why you should already have a cooler set up or some beers in the fridge. The scenery in the movie will relax your mind and make that beer taste that much better, just grab a fan and a warm lamp and you can be on the open ocean with a beer in hand like Captain Ron as well. Drinking makes everything a lot more vivid and emotional. This movie is very positive and has warm sensations in every scene and the beer will make everything that much more appetizing. Being that you are a college student drinking might come first hand to you and a lot of times after a stressful day at school or getting rid of a hangover, going out to the bars could sound kind of trite and over played. This is why unwinding to Captain Ron in the comfort of your home, with beer in hand if chosen but strongly recommended, is the only way to go. Sure, you could just pop in a mindless comedy that you already have, like Dumb and Dumber, or you don’t have to listen to them make “the most annoying sound in the world” and you could enjoy the sound of the ocean and palm trees with Captain Ron. Captain Ron is just the movie for you, if drinking, relaxing, and having a gay old time is what you fancy.
The humor in Captain Ron does not only come from the main characters, which include Captain Ron and the family. All of the other people they come across in the tropics are key players in the movie as well. For example the Harvey family runs into guerillas on the island of Ted’s and Captain Ron offers them a ride in exchange for some guns. The father of the family throws the guns in the water and does not want to give the revolutionaries a ride anywhere, however, little did he know that if he gave the guns back instead of throwing them out then he could do this. The humorous part is that the revolutionaries actually turn out to be fun guys. One has his eyes on the daughter of the family and they talk for the whole day, while the boy plays monopoly with the general and takes all of his money.
Captain Ron is one of those movies that never gets old. I like a lot of movies but after watching them once or twice I am almost sick of seeing them. I have seen Captain Ron probably thirty times throughout my life. I know all of you will fall in love with this movie, the cover alone will show you the good time awaiting. I have been watching Captain Ron since I was about five or six and I still enjoy it today being a freshman in college. My parents as well, even at there age, enjoy the movie as much as I if not more. The easiness and calming mood of the movie are what make it easy and enjoyable to watch over and over. The humor suits almost everybody and that is amazing because you can watch it with anybody you want. Whether it is hanging out with your girlfriend or drinking beers with the guys, this movie will have you hooked and anyone else that watches it. Everybody loves to watch good movies, so there is no reason that you should not see this movie. It will rank up there with the best of your movies.
As said before Captain Ron is one of its own and a one of a kind movie that you must not go through life without watching. Some might say that the disapearence of Captain Ron at the end of the movie is a set back, however, it just livens his character that much more and lets you create your own spontaneous ending, for all we know he went back and found the sexy girl from the lagoon. From the little romance that there is to the crazy, wild adventure and humor, Captain Ron is your movie. Alex Chuplis
