Mustek Scanner
The scanner is attached to the Dell computer nearest the window. It has options for scanning, copying, faxing, and emailing images, but currently only scanning is supported. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is another feature that will transfer your scanned image to a MS Word Document if it has fonts the program recognizes.
Scanning 101
- Position your document in the upper right corner of the scanner and close the scanner lid.
- The desktop on the Dell computer has an icon for "Scanner Panel". Lifting the lid and positioning your item to be scanned automatically opens the scanning program, but if this doesn't happen, double click the icon.
-
Changing image quality - click the "Settings" button (1, below) to access scanner settings. You can select from "Normal" (lowest file size and a bit grainier) to "Superfine" (about 8x bigger file but approaching photo quality). For most documents, webpages, or powerpoints, "Normal" should be sufficient.
On the Scanner Panel, click the "Scan" button (2, below).

The document will scan and the program will open to a series of preview panes. The first will allow you to correct your image if it’s tilted by pressing the "Deskew" Button (1, below). Click "Next" when done (2, below).

The next Screen (Crop & Rotate) – allows you to do just that. Grab the circles on the corner of the dashed box, or the sides of the box around your image and resize so that you’re only selecting what you want. You can also rotate the image ninety degrees left or right using the circular arrow buttons. Click the "Next" button when you are done.

The next two screens allow for Redeye control and Decoration and look similar to the above screens. Click the redeye button if needed, then press "Next". In the Decoration screen, you'll probably just want to click "Finish".

Your image will open in the JP2View program, and save as a "JP2" file in the "Scanned Images" folder on the desktop. The image will likely be larger than the screen, so setting the zoom dropdown to "Fit to Screen" in JP2View may be desirable.
You can resize and rotate the image in JP2View using the "Edit" menu. To save the image as a JPG or other format, select File -> Save As. Set "Save in:" to save the image to the desktop or your thumbdrive. Choose a file name, and set "Save as type:" to JPEG or another format. You can upload the file from the desktop to a FirstClass email if needed.
Enjoy your images. One last thing, to avoid overloading the computer's hard drive, please delete your JP2 image(s) from the "Scanned Images" folder when done. Thanks!
OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
This device is super handy. It can be used to turn typed documents into word files, where you can edit them (Does not work with hand written documents).
When you get to the panel screen press OCR
When the next screen pops up press OCR again.
