CRR and Public Access Computers

The computers in the library and CRR are maintained by ISAT. We do what we can if there's a problem, which is usually just restarting the computer.  If you can help a patron with easy questions about using FirstClass or the Library Databases, do so.  For more in depth database research questions please refer patrons to their department librarian.  They can use this convenient web form.

The CRR is run by ISAT. We are responsible for opening/closing, and resupplying paper and toner only. The CRR side door should remain closed at all times. People will ask us for assistance, however, especially regarding the printers. FYI:

  • Turn on PCs and Macs in the morning and set to AUNE Library Homepage during opening shift duties.  Turn off PCs and Macs before closing the library at night. Make sure to turn off the computer screens as well, to save energy.
  • Never turn off the printer release station--this stays on at all times!
  • Printer paper is located under the library front desk, near the AV room.
  • Toner is located in a tan cabinet in the CRR.  The cabinet key is hanging on the key rack. There is a "good" key and a "bad" key. Make sure you have the one labeled "good," you'll be much happier. Follow directions for changing the toner outlined here.
  • Restart computers if they are having trouble.

Thin Clients - located in side alley and in front of circulation desk.  Note that the "scanner computer" and Foundation Center computer are not thin clients, so the following does not apply to them.

Thin clients use a lot less energy than conventional computers.  These computers operate a little differently than regular PC's. Since they are connected to one central server rather having their own individual CPU's, all programs run through the central server.  Therefore, programs running on one thin client in the library may affect the performance of a totally different thin client (because all are using memory from that one central server).  So, when they are done using the thin clients, we ask Patrons to close all program windows.  If you see a thin client that is not being used, please close any program windows (such as Firefox) that may be open.

Some important things to know:

  • No individual CPU: All Thin Clients run through one central ISAT server.  Each Client contains only a monitor with small hub in the back containing a USB port and a headphone jack.
  • Streaming Videos: Library and database related videos should play fine , but other video hosting sites such as You Tube will play choppy and are not recommended.  If patrons need to use You Tube, they can still use the CRR computers or our Loaner Laptops.
  • No CD/DVD drive -  Again, CRR and loaner laptops still have these, as well as the TV in the Rhino Room.
  • Saving files:  There is a USB extender coming from the back of the monitor so patrons can plug their flashdrives in (this is the preferred method).  If they don't have a flashdrive and they want to send the work to themselves, they can either borrow a flashdrive from us, or, save to either the H drive or within the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.  Patrons CANNOT save directly to the Desktop or anywhere else other than the computer's H drive. It's also good to keep in mind that even though they can save to the H drive, they shouldn't rely on it staying there.
  • Turning it on/off:You still need to turn them on/off but there is no shut down in the menu, so simply reach around to the back left hand side underneath the hub and switch in on/off (see below)!  Then turn on/off the monitor screen in the front as with any monitor.
