Computer Updates and Routine Maintenance

Here are the marching orders the library will be carrying out on the 3rd Wednesday morning of every month to run updates and maintain our 21 laptops. We have a master file of all software that should be on every machine. We can evaluate and purge unused programs.

Each 3rd Wednesday, 8AM: Set up all lib laptops (with power cords) in media room. Exception: Mini laptops - these are maintained once per semester.

  1. Log in with admin account (ask Emily about how to do this)
  2. Updates: Go to start menu>all programs>microsoft update>custom install
  3. Disk Cleanup: start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup
  • DO NOT "COMPRESS OLD FILES" OR "OFFICE SETUP FILES" - quotes are approximate
  • Yes: internet cache, anything "temporary," recycle bin
  1. Defrag: start>all programs>accessories>system tools>defragment
  2. Check for Zotero in Firefox and Word
  3. Check that wireless manager is Windows not Intel
  4. Run "yellow shield" updates if applicable (express install)
  5. Run any other visible updates from task bar (mcafee, java, etc)
  6. Make sure Power settings are: Screensaver - 5 minutes, Turn off monitor - 20 minutes; Turn off hard disks - 45 minutes; System standby - 1 hour; System hibernates - 2 hours
  7. Restart
  8. From user logins, make sure the home page is set to: www.antiochne.edu/library/default.cfm?ref=lib
  9. Run any additional "yellow shield" updates that may not have already run.
  10. Note anomalies and email them to Emily.
  11. Make sure Quicktime, Office 2007 Compatibility Pack, and Windows Service Pack 3 are installed on all laptops.
  12. Shut down FULLY, clean with microfiber mit and put away.

Make sure LAPTOP UPDATES are pushed out in Circ Desk Schedule in bright green each third wednesday of the month.

Make sure that all laptops and the laptop cart are reserved in Bookit beginning 7PM the evening before the third wednesday of every month and continuing through until noon on that Wednesday.

Estimated time: 4 hours.
