Flip 'Ultra HD' Video Cameras (3)
Location: Gray Shelves in back, next to Mini-DV camcorders
The Flip Ultra HD is a snazzy, easy-to-use video camera that runs off of flash memory. It is useful especially because it has such a simple interface, and it transfers video directly to a computer via USB. The software it uses to do this is built onto its 8GB hard drive and it will give you the option to install it on your computer when you plug it in. This coupled with its built-in USB connector make the Flip! a self-contained unit, with no need to carry around peripherals like cables or CDs. Because the USB connector is so short, however, we lend out an extender with the unit.
The Flip! is circulated like the other video cameras, and it can be found under the Camcorders group in BookIt. Remember to charge it in Voyager and fill out a checklist (sign out sheet).
- 120 minutes recording time
- Hold vertically when recording
- bottom screws onto any tripod

- The Flip! Mino Itself
- NiMH Battery Pack
- The carrying case
- USB Extension
- AC Adapter
- Faux velvet bag
Note that maximum audio recording range is about 14 feet, less if the subject is not speaking in the direction of the camera.

The Flip's battery pack needs to be recharged before recirculating. Please ADD a 3.5 hr "Battery Recharging" reservation to the end of each Bookit transaction. Then recharge using the AC Adapter (which is provided in your pack, there is a spot on the adapter you plug the USB connector on the Flip to) for up to 3.5 hours upon its return. A battery charge meter appears in the Flip screen. Use this meter to monitor charging. However, it is hard to see this meter using the AC adapter on a wall outlet, as the screen faces the wall:

It is possible to recharge the Flip using a computer USB port, but this takes 6 hours instead of 3.5 hours (so we prefer to use the AC Adapter).
Also note that the Flip Ultra HD can run off of "regular" AA Batteries if the patron would like to use these as a backup to the main rechargeable battery pack.
Installing software onto computers is an easy process, as the software set-up essentially runs itself.
To download videos from the Flip onto a computer:
- Plug-in via USB (do not use a USB extender cable when doing this for the first time, the Flip software doesn't seem to load right).
- The software will open automatically, or prompt you to install if it's the first time you're using the Flip on that computer.
- Click on the video you would like to save.
- Click the icon for "save to computer" found in the bottom left corner of the screen.
