AV PowerMeter
LOCATION: Battery Cart
The AV PowerMeter can measure the amount of electricity used by any household appliance with a standard two or three-pronged outlet plug. It can also use your electricity rate to calculate the cost of each electrical appliciance per day, week, month, or year. *Tip: The longer you leave the appliance plugged into the PowerMeter, the more accurate your reading will be.
Calculating Cost and Amount of Electricity
Display elapsed time connected
-
Begin with the KILL A WATT EZ unit plugged into a grounded outlet.
-
Plug your appliance into the KILL A WATT EZ unit.
-
Turn the appliance on.
-
Press and hold the RESET key on the unit. Wait a few seconds until “rESt” appears on the LCD. Release the RESET key and the measurements taken on the previous appliance rated using the unit have been deleted and the total accumulated KWH, Elapsed Time and Cost measurements have been reset to zero.
To calculate actual cost of electricity consumed and project future costs:
-
Press and hold the pink SET rate key until “Rate” is displayed and the current set rate flashes
-
Press the UP and DOWN keys on the unit to set your desired rate; i.e. if your utility charges you 10.6 cents per KWH, set the rate to $0.106. Check your electric bill for this information.
-
Press the SET key again and “SAVE” will appear briefly, indicating that the rate has been entered. The unit display will then return to the Measurements mode.
To display power consumption cost:
-
Press the MENU key until “Cost” is displayed.
-
Initially, “Total” will be displayed – this is the dollar amount representing the total cost of power consumed by the attached appliance since the last reset (which reflects consumption since you set the rate per KWH in the steps above). The display may indicate 0.00 if very little time has elapsed. The longer you leave the appliance plugged in, the more accurate this reading will be.
To display cost projections reflecting the entered rate per KWH:
-
Press the UP and DOWN key to advance through the cost projection period options (Hour, Day, Week, Month, Year).
-
The numeric display will indicate the projected cost to run the attached appliance for the selected period, based on current power consumption. However, the most accurate consumption readings and projections are obtained by leaving the appliance attached over time to reflect the power usage through on/off cycles of usage that are common with appliances such as air-conditioners, refrigerators, televisions, computers, etc. Accurate cost projections for appliances that are used continuously or that have relatively constant energy requirements can be obtained within minutes.
To display the power usage in various units:
-
Press the MENU key until “Volt” is displayed.
-
Cycle through the Volts, Current, Watts, Frequency, Power Factor, and VA measurements by pressing the UP and DOWN keys. For Kilowatt-Hour display, press the MENU key until “KWH” is indicated. Consumption is displayed in Kilowatt-Hours (from 0.01 KWH to 9999 KWH).
-
Reset the accumulated KWH by pressing and holding the RESET key. When “rESt” appears on the display, release the key and the units will begin to accumulate from zero.
To display elapsed time connected since the last reset:
-
Press the MENU key until “Elapsed Time” is indicated in the display.
-
To reset the elapsed time measurement, press and hold the RESET key until “rESt” appears momentarily on the LCD. Once you release the RESET key, the previous measurements have been deleted and the total accumulated KWH, Elapsed Time, and Cost measurements are reset to zero.
